Commercial Description:
Bruegel is an easy drinking soft and tasty amber ale. Thanks to the refermentation it offers more body, more head and more taste than most other American and Belgian Amber ales. It is brewed with Dutch barley and German hops. Although the bitterness is clearly present, it is not dominant.

11.2 fl oz bottle from a variety 6-pack obtained at Florian’s in Auburn. Smells like butterscotch and band-aids... uh-oh... Somewhat murky yellow-red body with almost no head to speak of. Un-pleasantly astringent... Tastes like bad citrus mixed with diacetyl, or like cat urine smells. I must have a bad bottle... too bad too, since it’s probably the only bottle I’ll ever have. The first Belgian I’ve ever had to pour out... :(

Pours an unassuming clear amber with a big fluffy white head, dwindling to a handful of big bubbles and thin white film. The nose is really sweet, too sweet. A cloying sticky (stinky?) caramel predominates. Almost stomach turning in terms of sheer sweetness. The palate is fairly decent. While the body isn’t very heavy, the carbonation is just lively enough to imbue this not watery brew with some volume. The flavor is a step up from the aroma. The caramel sweet cloying stickiness is still there, but not so extreme and there is a bit of "Belgianness" and even some Saaz-like hops to balance the flavor. Beyond the sweetness there lies an allmost peppery element, particularly in the aftertaste. Of course, the sweetness lingers far too much as well.

Clear orange-brown in color, medium sized bubbly white head. Smells like fruit, poppy seeds, bread, veggies, spices. Tastes tangy, sweet, spicey. Its tastes and smells a bit strange, I think, and is slightly offensive.

Mapley color with thin white head, it’s got a yeasty cheesy aroma with a hint of caramel. Taste is a bit pretzely, and carries a funky acetic undertone. $3/11.2oz

Dark gold color.Has a sort of skunky metallic aroma, head starts out large and bubbly but evaporates fast. Has a sour malty taste. Kind of watery. Tastes ok but not as good as other Belgians out there.

Poured from bottle (Belgian sampler). Clear amber. Gassy aroma of rotting veggies and apples. Theres a part of the flavor I like (malt) and a part I don’t (vinegar-like aftertaste). That aroma is prevalent with every sip and that’s not good. Its like someone mixed a great beer withy a bad one, or maybe this is just aging badly. Couldn’t finish this one.
