| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 10, 2009 Big dark pour with tan head. Aroma of brown sugar, molasses spice. Flavor is interesting: I get some roasty malt and chocolate, spice, sweet burnt sugar, then some coffee with a nice tart orange peel in the finish. Nice mouthfeel with a tad less carbonation than most belgian ales. Still, solid, delicious ale. JCB (1796), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 6, 2009 750ml from my man StFun - thanks, Josh!!! Lively dark brown pour, not unlike what you’d expect from a dubbel. Crisp brown head, notes of dark fruits in the nose, slightly tart in a way that suggests the bottle conditioning didn’t quite end up as expected. I dig the addition of sweets and spices, though I’d have liked more of a roasted malt component. Full mouthfeel, pleasant finish that’s slightly tart. Seems from the ratings that the bottles are really inconsistent, but I enjoyed this one. TearsforBeers (173), Ohio, USA

Pours dark amber read. Aroma is of sweet malts and some hops. Flavor was unlike beer - sweet, chili, coriander, pepper interesting. Mouthfeel was normal. Overall, a decent interesting beer. bu11zeye (5631), Frisco, Texas, USA

Aroma of toasted grain, rye, chocolate, nuts, and some dark fruit. Flavor of plum, rye, toasted malt, Belgian yeast, light coffee, and cocoa with a dry finish. This bottle of Dark Belgian-style Ale was sadly infected: dill aromas, rubber, vinegary acidity, etc. This should not have been released.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A circle of foam dips into the near blackness.
-Carbonation is expansive, propelling all off flavors even further onto the palate.
-Roasted malts have earthy components.
-The body is relatively thin, but I don’t know if this is the result of the present infection.
-I didn’t know when I had this brew, but seeing the ingredient list I can imagine there were many opportunities to get infections and at least one problem got by them at bottling.
-This was quite the bummer because their bottled Tripel was as good as it was authentic.
