Commercial Description:
Named after Frank Appleton, this is perhaps our most delightful balance of full-bodied maltiness and aromatic hoppiness! It has been said to rival the best of England's brown ales, and has certainly become a local favourite.

Hazy dark brown colour. Straightforward malty/hazelnutty aroma. Strange body - both full and thin, like you’d find in a nitro beer, but this was a firkin. I guess both have low carbo. No worries though, I’ll be at the brewery next month. The flavour is mainly about carastany malts and a light nuttiness. Doesn’t appear anything wrong with the beer, but a standard brown ale is just so uninspiring for me.

Draught at the brewpub, hand pulled
Brown-amber color. It has some caramel aroma and a mixed caramel-roasted malt flavor, with a medium dry mouthfeel. Straightforward beer, but quite good.

Fading off-white ring covers the clear deep brown pour. Irony roasted malts dominate the nose that takes its substance mostly from malt. Tin, dryish toasted caramel, short finish hinting at shy hop derived leafiness. A rather minimalist example, dry yet malty and ultimately feeling thin and not worth a whole lot of attention.

on hand pump-pours a dissipating light tan head with bubbles and amber/brown color. Aroma is medium malt-sweet molasses, dark fruit. Taste is medium malt-sweet molasses, nutty, dark fruit.

Dark orange, which is a light color for the style. Maple and coriander nose, simple scent really. Good body, rich but still a bit thin. Roasted nuts (almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds), maple flavors, surprisingly good. More of a scotch/brown ale hybrid in my mind.

Malty molasses and brown sugar aroma. Still appearance and texture. Malty flavour but with an odd cruciferous vegetable flavour. Can’t say that I enjoyed it.

Aroma suggests pears, brown sugar and toasted malts with a floral undertone. Hazy amber-brown body is topped by a decent, fine bubbled tan head that recedes to a relatively well-lasting cover with some nice lacing. Sweetness up front is joined by a quick hit of dark malts and light offsetting bitterness. Caramel lingers in the aftertaste. Medium full body with wonderful soft-bubbled carbonation. Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle purchased at Brewery Creek in Apr-09.

Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc, mabel and tupalev - my bottle via trade with puzzl. (best before December 07). Clear mahogany pour, smallish off-white head. Grain, light roast, mild dry hops. Somewhat syrupy taste, but grainy and lightly herbal - perhaps a tad dry. Light body, mildly astringent and quick-finishing - pretty decent - thanks, Greg.
