Commercial Description:
Named after Frank Appleton, this is perhaps our most delightful balance of full-bodied maltiness and aromatic hoppiness! It has been said to rival the best of England's brown ales, and has certainly become a local favourite.

Hazy dark brown colour. Straightforward malty/hazelnutty aroma. Strange body - both full and thin, like you’d find in a nitro beer, but this was a firkin. I guess both have low carbo. No worries though, I’ll be at the brewery next month. The flavour is mainly about carastany malts and a light nuttiness. Doesn’t appear anything wrong with the beer, but a standard brown ale is just so uninspiring for me.

on hand pump-pours a dissipating light tan head with bubbles and amber/brown color. Aroma is medium malt-sweet molasses, dark fruit. Taste is medium malt-sweet molasses, nutty, dark fruit.

Nearly no aroma at all, and what there is is light and sweet. Pours a dark brown with a decent head. Nutty, pleasant flavour. Mild hopping, not much in the way of a finish. Thin and low in carbonation, an ok beer.

Draught sample from Swans Hotel. Light nutty aroma, with mild chocolate and neutral hoppiness. Very mild aroma. Medium copper-brown clear with foamy light tan lacing head. Medium-light bodied with smooth carbonation (don’t remember if hand pump or not). Smooth brown ale with light biscuity malt character, smooth nutty notes, with a bit of cherry wood and hint of diacetyl. Smooth finish with mild sweetness and light fruity character. After is slightly nutter. A decent brown ale.

7/14/07 On draught at the brewery. Aroma is light caramel blended with citrus. Appearance is light brownish copper with a good white head. Flavor is very light malt almost no hop character, quite off from style. Mouthfeel is creamy with low carb texture. Overall, this is more like an English mild than a brown.

On a small pub crawl while onshore for a few hrs from my cruise ship, I hit up Swan’s. As a general statement for all of their beers that i tried, the good news is that they were served at the right temperature. The bad news is that none of them was too good, IMHO. THis was slightly roasty, a bit thin.
