| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Dec 17, 2009 In short: A strange fruity strong brew of some kind. Weird and off.
How: Bottle 12oz, vintage 2009, consumed fresh. Mini-tasting session with some of the Montreal crew
The look: Cloudy dark golden body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: Nose as a strange sweet orange & marmalade aroma. Taste is equally weird. Oily bread, oily sweetened fruit puree, spicy notes, watery toffee. Finish is strangely astringent. No alcohol presence. This beer was strange in a way I cannot really describe with flavour elements. I like beer that tries something different but this one was just as peculiar as a basketball bat. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 22, 2009 My Bottom Line:
The prevalent spiciness of orange peels tickle this Barley Wine’s suave caramel malt, adding some depth to the overt berry fruitiness.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the misty dark red.
-This is not your typical Barley Wine aroma.
-The mouthfeel is perhaps lean for the style. I’d prefer more malt present and less spice.
-The omnipresent spiciness makes me imagine rye notes in the grain bill.
-This is very approachable for the style, which is a plus for them, I’m sure.

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jul 29, 2009 Bottle. Dark dirtyish amber. Strong thick syrupy orange aroma. It’s a sipper. Plenty of orange. Hops. Like a marmelade beer. Orange-toffee and hops. Hops are restrained and provide a strong spice. Not sure how much oak I get from this. Spice keeps building with each sip, from quiet paper to a bit of heat. Orange slips back into the body. It’s a solid beer but doesn’t tickle my fancy. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 30, 2009 Tap at Alibi Room. Very sweet aroma. Heavy and toasty with a sticky sweet aroma. Chewy pale malt and a touch of light cherry character. A bit of apricot and peach with a lot of estery yeastiness. Not a whole lot in the way of hoppiness, but it’s not a bad English style barleywine. JHunter (248), British Columbia, Canada

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Apr 25, 2009 Sweet aroma with vinous dark fruits, alcohol and toffee. Some nutty character is also quite apparent. Pours a beautiful clear ruby brown coloured body topped by a medium bubbled off white, creamy head that reduces fairly quickly to a thin partial cover. Toffee and caramel blend wonderfully with dark malts. Some orange citrus hops are apparent. Bitterness is quite strong but and gives great balance to the sticky sweetness. Nuttiness is apparent also in the aftertaste. Thick rich texture with moderate carbonation to offset the sticky sweetness. Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle (2009 version) purchased at Brewery Creek in Apr-09.
