Commercial Description:
The Hippie I.P.A. continues to be the Buckeye Brewing Company’s best selling beer. First brewed in the summer of ’98, the “Hippie” has become a Cleveland classic among hop lovers. Reminiscent of ales brewed on the Pacific west coast, the Hippie I.P.A. is big, rich in malt and chock full of hops. American malts are used in the grain bill, including pale ale, crystal, dextrin malt and torrified wheat. It is hopped five times with a combination of Northern Brewer and Cascade. After fermentation, hops are added “dry” to impart bold hop aroma. The Hippie starts at 1.068 and is 80 IBU’s.

bottle. pours a hazy honey color with a thin white head that fades to a film and laces nicely. smell is fairly stronger caramel malt than i expected, mixed with some nuts, a bit of berries, and a hint of floral sprucey hops. the hops come out a lot more in the taste, which is dominated by a pretty strong floral character. fairly low carbonation and an almost creamy mouthfeel work well with a medium-bitter finish. an interesting and different ipa that i’ll drink again if i get the chance.

Dark amber pour with a nice frothy white head. Aroma of piney hops. Taste of some caramel malt with a nice bitter finish. Not much pine in the taste.

Nice clean hop nose starts this beer off. It pours a clear dark amber with a thick white head. Somewhat one noted bitterness from the hops, with a caramel malt backbone. Not much in the way of citrus/pine. A decently long bitter finish. A decent IPA, but doesn’t match up to the best of the style.

Props to Buckeye. I’m a big IPA fan and I must admit this is my favorite. Pours a beautiful copper color and the aroma of Cascade hops is perfect. Nice head and a perfect carbonation level. The flavor is right on. The Brewery moved in the past year and I couldn’t find the beers for a while but, they are starting to turn up again (this sample was on tap) I think it tasts even better than before, not sure if it is brewed any differently now, or if it seemed better because I haven’t had it in a while. I strongly reccomend this to all of you hopheads out there.

Dark orange wiht a nice head, big bubbles. Fruity pine hop aroma, nice aroma. Nice hoppy taste but not too bitter at the end. SOme citrus hops come through as well. Smooth Body with sweet caramel malt undertones. Want another sip after the last sip.

bottle from dankman: pours with alot of carbonation a very large whithe head above a slightly hazy copper body. aroma of wonder floral, citrus hops, very fresh hop aroma. beneath that is a sweet caramel malt. it has a wierd lemon lime soda smell, not bad though. flavour is sweet and has plenty of upfront citrus hop bitterness. it finishes dry and a little bready with some more of the hop bitter that is just a little off. overall very good

22oz bottle, courtesy of miketd. Thanks, Mike! Pours a clear, medium amber color; off-white head with patchy, fine-bubbled lacing. Surprisingly malty, earthy aroma; there’s definitely a significant citrus and grassy hoppiness in there, but it’s all but overshadowed by wet malts and brown sugar. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: plenty of chewy maltiness and resiny citrus hop character; lively carbonation; slightly astringent, mouthdrying hop presence; there’s a chewy candy sugar / floral presence that appears at mid-palate. The roughness in the palate makes it hard to drink a lot of this, although it’s a pleasant enough dose of hops. Lengthy, candy sugar and astringent hop finish; mouthdrying.
