Commercial Description:
The Hippie I.P.A. continues to be the Buckeye Brewing Company’s best selling beer. First brewed in the summer of ’98, the “Hippie” has become a Cleveland classic among hop lovers. Reminiscent of ales brewed on the Pacific west coast, the Hippie I.P.A. is big, rich in malt and chock full of hops. American malts are used in the grain bill, including pale ale, crystal, dextrin malt and torrified wheat. It is hopped five times with a combination of Northern Brewer and Cascade. After fermentation, hops are added “dry” to impart bold hop aroma. The Hippie starts at 1.068 and is 80 IBU’s.

Bomber. Pours a dark orange with a bubbly white head that fades quickly to just a small cap. Aroma is flowery, fruity hops. A little resinous. Appetizing though not too strong. Pleasant. Sweetness with a touch of maltiness underneath. Reminds me of a subdued Two Hearted. Taste is smooth at first then quickly fades to a watery middle and a very short finish. Severely lacking in the flavor and mouthfeel. This smelled good but is way too watery. No nice hop bitterness or taste I was expecting and no finish. At least it looked and smelled okay. Disappointing.

Thanks to Puddintane for this bottle (and to miketd for another). Hazy amber color with a medium off-white head. Aroma has some nice earthy hop action going on mixed with an interesting bready-caramel-grainy malt smell. Flavor has a decent dose of earthen hops, bready, darker malts, some citrus, and even a bit of wood that I seem to be picking up. Nice feel, but a tad on the thin/watery side. Pretty good IPA.

[429-20070720] 12floz (w/ jerc). Light body odour aroma, almost "woodsy" with grassy hops and pine resin. Clear, amber red body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Grassy hops continues in flavour with a bit of citrus peel. Medium body is very bitter after. Nice and happy hippie hoppy. (7/4/7/3/15) 3.6

[1356B-20080517] 1pt6floz bottle. Hoppy orange aroma has some earthy tones. Clear, amber orange body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Bitter hoppy orange flavour has a little soapy malt. Medium body. Nice hoppy brew. (7/3/8/3/16) 3.7

Bottle. Amber body, big creamy beige head (3+). Rich resiny aroma, piney, touch of caramel. Average bitterness for an IPA is fairly resiny, earthy malt. Very light herbaceous notes. Long lingering resiny bitterness in the aftertaste. Light grapefruit astringency at times. Average to medium palate. Decent but not exceptional.

Sampled at the RBSG ’07 grand tasting room. Shared by nolankowal, this beverage pours a sem-cloudy copper amber brew with a thin beige head that quickly dissolves to a fine film. Spotty lacing. Aroma of grapefruit, a little caramel and a touch of flowery hops. Taste has more citrus peel, pine, and light carbonation. Finish has a metalic dry aftertaste. Hey, this is the beer jsquire had his photo taken with.
