Commercial Description:
The Hippie I.P.A. continues to be the Buckeye Brewing Company’s best selling beer. First brewed in the summer of ’98, the “Hippie” has become a Cleveland classic among hop lovers. Reminiscent of ales brewed on the Pacific west coast, the Hippie I.P.A. is big, rich in malt and chock full of hops. American malts are used in the grain bill, including pale ale, crystal, dextrin malt and torrified wheat. It is hopped five times with a combination of Northern Brewer and Cascade. After fermentation, hops are added “dry” to impart bold hop aroma. The Hippie starts at 1.068 and is 80 IBU’s.

RBSG07. From 75 cL bottle. Pours amber with little head. Aroma of floral hops, slight soapy but within decent limits. Flavour is dry, hoppy and slight floral. Finish is bitter dry.

Sampled at the RBSG 07 Grand Tasting. Red gold color with no head. Well done hoppy nose but the body was too grainy and there was an odd characteristic in the finish.

Rated 11/4/06: Pretty tame IPA, but well rounded and easily enjoyed. This brew by the mysterious Buckeye Brewing Co. showed up at the store recently so I had to grab one. Aroma is hoppy, mostly pine with some citrus very mellow for this style needs to be more assertive. Great pour darker than most others theres a caramel almost light brown tint to the dark copper color. Fluffy off white head and great lacing that trickles back down. Mouthfeel is creamier and smoother than many IPA’s, there’s a nice satisfying fullness to this one. Flavor is real tasty but I was expecting more bittering hops especially since it touts itself as being 80 IBU’s. Again mostly pine with some citrus but lacking the grapefruit taste that I love in a good IPA. Nice one by the good folks up north.

Sampled a bottle I brought home from a trip to Cleveland in June ’06. Aroma was very pleasant, a nice balance of hops and malt without overdoing any single characteristic. Definitely hoppy though. Beer was a hazy dark tan color with a finely beaded white head that featured an excellent stand. Palate entry was dominated by strong hop character although the caracteristic piney character of cascades was absent, (which to me means it was done right) which faded into a rich malt backbone that had a subtle caramel character and a senese of sweetened condensed milk. Some sense of ripe pears in the flavor gave a nice couterpoint to the hops. BUs kick in at the end with a strong presence which leaves a drying finish. Really well balanced and very complete flavor profile. Mouthfeel was rich with a medium-full body. Drying finish was not unpleasant. Overall, really enjoyed this beer and would be happy to have more!

Hazy, deep and dark orange. Thin arcs and blobs of lacing. Very slowly receding off-white head with admirable retention. Aroma contains orange, grape, tangerine, all from plentiful hops. Some earthy notes are light but definitely there. Malt is toasty, but buttery. Some breadiness. Decent though nothing special. The flavor is abhorrent in its astringency. Bland, mostly just bitter, heavily bitter. It seems like the beer is composed of ninety percent bittering hops now, the small remainder of the aromatic variety are seemingly crushed under this intense curtain of acidity. The palate is however very creamy and warming. Finishes moderately bitter and very dry. It probably finishes very bitter, but one sip of this and my tastebuds have been wrecked for quite some time. Overall an unpleasant experience.

Bottle... Hazy orange ale with a mid-sized, frothy, white head. Tropical and citrus fruit nose with lots of floral, perfumey, Mandarin orange notes. The flavor is also perfumey... and violently bitter. Train wreck of hops. Medium-bodied and astringent as hell with lively carbonation. Lengthy, tannic, harshly bitter finish. boboski was responsible for this one... lol... thanks dude!

Courtesy boboski. Bright orange color, slightly cloudy, thin off-white head. Grassy, soapy hop aroma that loses power after a few minutes, which in this case was good. Moderate palate, undercarbonated. Unfortunately the soapy character translates to the taste. The finish was bitter, but the hop bitterness here was astringent and unpleasant.
