Commercial Description:
The Hippie I.P.A. continues to be the Buckeye Brewing Company’s best selling beer. First brewed in the summer of ’98, the “Hippie” has become a Cleveland classic among hop lovers. Reminiscent of ales brewed on the Pacific west coast, the Hippie I.P.A. is big, rich in malt and chock full of hops. American malts are used in the grain bill, including pale ale, crystal, dextrin malt and torrified wheat. It is hopped five times with a combination of Northern Brewer and Cascade. After fermentation, hops are added “dry” to impart bold hop aroma. The Hippie starts at 1.068 and is 80 IBU’s.

re-rate 8/07.
Pours extra hazy orange with a large head. Fair lacing. Aroma is sour citrus and pine, but a very big malt backbone.
Taste brings out the sweetness even more; caramel, toffee and raisins. Sweetness is way beyond balanced for an IPA. Medium body. Slightly astringent finish.

On draft at the Winking Lizard; they were out of the Bells Kalamazoo Stout on draft which I’ve been meaning to try, so I settled for the hometown IPA. Dark brown red body. Floral grassy aroma. Chewy caramel crystal malts show prominently, kind of like Arrogant Bastard. Grassy piney hops in the taste mostly. It started off well but kind of went downhill as I made my way through the pint. Kind of a bad taste by the end. I couldn’t really recommend this one.

(Bottle) Pours a clear copper body with an average-sized off-white head. Aroma of caramel malt, grapefruit, and pine. Flavor of hops and caramel with a dry, bitter finish.

Sampled on tap a Market street wine bar in Cleveland. Pours a murky amber-brown color with a thin white head. Solid aroma of fruity and spicy hops, I also smell lactose? Very good flavor of spicy and fruity hops with earthy malt, my twisted mind is again reminded of lactose, weird, the flavor finishes with bitterness. The body has a light to medium thickness with an oily texture and moderate carbonation. A superb IPA.

A hazed orange pour with little or no head and a guey lace. A nice hoppy aroma meets you at the rim of the glass not a grapefruity not a piney hoppiness but a really nice hop bill on this brew. A flavor of sweet malt, real sweet and a nice full hop bitter. The palate is good all round on this beer.

The best pale ale I’ve every had. Pours with no head and has an amber ale appearance; it is quite dark for a pale ale. Aroma has a citrus smell as does the taste. The best part is that it finishes with a quick bitterness and leaves little aftertaste. Highly recommended if you like pale ales
