Commercial Description:
The Hippie I.P.A. continues to be the Buckeye Brewing Company’s best selling beer. First brewed in the summer of ’98, the “Hippie” has become a Cleveland classic among hop lovers. Reminiscent of ales brewed on the Pacific west coast, the Hippie I.P.A. is big, rich in malt and chock full of hops. American malts are used in the grain bill, including pale ale, crystal, dextrin malt and torrified wheat. It is hopped five times with a combination of Northern Brewer and Cascade. After fermentation, hops are added “dry” to impart bold hop aroma. The Hippie starts at 1.068 and is 80 IBU’s.

Thanks Brewblackhole!! Cloudy orange. Smell of orange, tanerine, grapefruit, hops, malt and flowers. Taste of citrus, hops, malt, caramel notes and a bit salty. Dissapearing bitterness at the end.

Very large frothy off-white head of fine bubbles. Excellent carbonation. Settles very slowly. Great hoppy aroma with some malts, caramel, resinous hops and bitter grapefruit. Color is a nice dark ruddy amber. Fizzy in the mouth. Very lively. Hoppy and bitter. Biterness is a little harsh and dry. Thin body that could use some more malts for balance. More grapefruit rind. Little alcohol presence. Finish is dry and bitter. A decent IPA. Not sure who sent this to me but thanks.

Bottle from Sean, thanks. Red colored, nice head and lacing all the way down the glass. Beer is buttery and sweet, overly sweet. Not too hoppy, 80 ibus? Some notes of grass and hops, but its mostly dominated by butterscotch flavors. Sean and I couldnt decide if we had bad bottles, I got the same things he was picking up. Little bit of oranges in the mix as well. An alright beer, but not anywhere near the centenial IPA.

Bottle. Ross and I were chatting on AIM and tried this at the same time. Pours amber with a slight haze and nice frothy off white head, some floaties. Aroma of toffee and wet crystal malt. Flavor has a lot of butterscotch, countered by a fruity hop bitterness. Finish is very odd, bitter, soapy, buttery. A little bit of a jumbled mess. Did I get an bad bottle?

Huge citrusy hop aroma. caRMEL MALTS and rich citrus in the taste, full bitterness in the swallow, the bitterness softened in the 3rd and 4th sips ,the hops and malts came more into balance at the end, just another in the string of wonderful midwest IMP IPA’s

bomber. Aroma: Nose is full of hop. Lots of citrus, pine, and resin. Nice light floweriness in there, as well Some toastiness and light caramel lurking behind the hops. Appearance: Dark amber and just slightly hazed. Head was huge, mousselike, and lasted a loooong time. Flavor: A good balance of caramel maltiness and hop flavors. Again citrus and pine shine through, with notes of resin and flowery perfuminess. Then the bitterness kicks in. Bitterness is medium strong and long lasting. Maybe just a little too harsh and doesn’t quite integrate with the rest of the flavors. Palate: Medium bodied. Medium-light carbonation. Bitterness in finish lasts a long time. Overall: A good value, and a decent beer, but bitterness just doesn’t seem right to me.

Clear, deep coppery amber with a huge light tan head that settled fairly quickly to thin white ring. Big hop aroma of citrus and pine - the cascade is unmistakable. The big head had me thinking it was going to be overcarbonated, but it is actually very lightly carbonated with a medium body and quite nice mouthfeel. An immediate and strong flavor of burnt caramel is partially offset by some molasses type sweetness, but the bitter hops come on quickly with a vengeance, leading to a long bitter finish. I liked this quite a lot.
