Commercial Description:
The Hippie I.P.A. continues to be the Buckeye Brewing Company’s best selling beer. First brewed in the summer of ’98, the “Hippie” has become a Cleveland classic among hop lovers. Reminiscent of ales brewed on the Pacific west coast, the Hippie I.P.A. is big, rich in malt and chock full of hops. American malts are used in the grain bill, including pale ale, crystal, dextrin malt and torrified wheat. It is hopped five times with a combination of Northern Brewer and Cascade. After fermentation, hops are added “dry” to impart bold hop aroma. The Hippie starts at 1.068 and is 80 IBU’s.

Thanks OhioDad. 22 oz bomber. Deep amber beer with a thick tan head. Big fruity/piny hop aroma of orange and grapefruit. Sweet maltiness in back with caramel and toasted malt. Well balanced, fruity hops, berry and citrus over a clean toasty malt backbone. Lingering lightly resiny bitterness. Pretty straightforward, but well-made. As it warms, the berry/fruity notes come out even more. Excellent brew.

"I was really dissapointed with this brew. The Hippie IPA pours a dark brown color with orange hints. The head is a nice size and leaves very good lacing. The aroma is of bitter hops, but not much in the citrus or pine department. The taste is malty with bitter hops following through and hitting hard in the the finish. The bitterness lingers in the mouth as well. The mouthfeel is too thin--definitely watery. Doesn’t hold a candle to the better IPA’s out there from Stone, Great Divide, and so on."

via trade with OhioDad - 22 oz bottle Pours a deep amber color with a nice off white head that fades to a film. Very light lacing and carbonation. Nice citrus and floral hop aroma. Flavor has a nice balance. Citrus hop flavor with the right amount of malt sweetness. Has a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Medium body. No astringent after taste. A good beer. Thanks Scott.

Nice aroma. An explosion of "hemp" and grapefruit. Flavor is not quite as good. Bitterness is not as seemlessly integrated as some IPAs. Still pretty darn good though.

Bomber. Amber body, frothy white head. Toasty coffee cake and pear skin/citrus flesh in the aroma. Big grassy dry hopped flavor. The same toasted caramel bready thing is there but it’s swamped with bitter grass/citrus hops. Dry finish.

Rusty color with meringue like head. Light hop aroma. Tastes a little like a poorly made homebrew. No alcohol noted, I don’t believe the 6.8% listed. Finish is smooth.

Nose speaks of a huge hops blast of spicy burnt pine & citrus. No shortage of perfume. Why can’t someone make a cologne that smells like this? The titanic bone white tight frothy stiff head bursts forth like nothing I’ve ever before witnessed. I mean really, this is ridiculous. The brewers at Buckeye Brewing have taken the NOS head 1 step further by adding detergent to their beer. They definitely take good head seriously, I long for head like this. Did I already mention that this head has permanent retention? The flavor is not lacking in the balance department, not an easy task for the style. The character and depth are notable as well. The medium soft body is dry.

Pour is quite a bit darker than you’re average IPA, and you find out quickly upon you’re first taste chock full of pure malt why. Nose is mostly pure hop with a bit of that malt lingering around. As said, the flavor is extremely dominated by a wonderful malt backbone, with a great mixture of piney hop. This is a well made brew with very little to complain about, compliments of Ohiodad.
