Commercial Description:
The Hippie I.P.A. continues to be the Buckeye Brewing Company’s best selling beer. First brewed in the summer of ’98, the “Hippie” has become a Cleveland classic among hop lovers. Reminiscent of ales brewed on the Pacific west coast, the Hippie I.P.A. is big, rich in malt and chock full of hops. American malts are used in the grain bill, including pale ale, crystal, dextrin malt and torrified wheat. It is hopped five times with a combination of Northern Brewer and Cascade. After fermentation, hops are added “dry” to impart bold hop aroma. The Hippie starts at 1.068 and is 80 IBU’s.

Agree with kramer, at $3.79 this is one of the good deals in great beer. Amber pour with a big off white head fruity mildly acidic nose. Flavor is one of the finest ruby red grapefruit flavors produced by an IPA in recent memory. Some nice malt balance but mostly dominated by the grapefruit. For 80 IBU’s it is fairly easy on the palate. Highly recommended.

22 oz bottle, via kujo9. Dark copper pour with a fluffy off-white head that fades to a thin film. Citric hop aroma over a deeply malty sweet caramel base. Lots of grapefruit. Moderately aggressive hoppiness well balanced against a malty background. Very clesn and crisp finish that’s slightly fruity and lightly bitter. Medium bodied with fine bubbled carbonation that dances on the tongue playfully. A classic IPA, this really defines the style well to me. The price sticker was still on the bottle, and at $3.79 this is a frickin’ bargain.

Pours the color of an old penny-much browner than I expected. Quite a bit of carbonation, a mid-sized foamy head and a wonderful hops aroma. Evergreen scented hops dominate the nose, but grapefruit and a little malt are also present. I was really disappointed at how this one came together (or didn’t). Starts out with a strange caramel malt flavor that meanders its way to a Cascade hops bitter explosion at the end, but the problem is that the transition from sweet to bitter just isn’t smooth and takes a few strange detours on the way.

Bottle Poured a hazy dark amber with a small quickly dissipating head. Piney citrusy hop aroma and a nice balanced hoppy flavor as well. A bit thin feeling but a nice IPA Thanks to OhioDad for this one

Had on tap at the Winking Lizard Tavern. Dark amber with little head. Rather hoppy in aroma and taste. Also some citrus and light on the malt. Fairly thin body with a fair amount of carbonation. A very respectable IPA

I have had this beer on tap and from the bottle. Nice dark color for an IPA. It is hard to beat The_Beer_God’s description. Pine, citrus, a little malt. The bottled version seems to have more to it than on-tap. All around pretty decent micro brew from my home town.

Bottle courtesy of JasonG. Pours a murky ruddy amber with a small tanned head. Nose is hoppy but sweet. Lots of pine, light grapefruit, orange juice, sweet malts, caramel and whiffs of maple syrup. Taste expands on that a bit more. More pine and earthy hops, aromatic flowers, light orange juice, caramel, light hints of syrup covered pancakes, and light lemonade. Nice balance between the hops and malt. Body seems a bit thinner than it should. There’s a mild carbonation and a pleasant dryness towards the finish but it needs to be a bit thicker bodied. Finishes with more hop bliss and light earthiness. Some hints of toffee, lots of sweet malts and grapefruit juice. Very nice but needs some body behind it.

Bottle: Murky & dirty bath water look with a nice white head. Wonderful aromas of perfume, juniper shrubs and freshly mown grass. The carbonation was high with a thin and enjoyable feel. It also has a nice bitter finish that stays with you for a long time. This is a great IPA! Thanks OhioDad via the snoop dog himself, Indiana_Red!
