Commercial Description:
The Hippie I.P.A. continues to be the Buckeye Brewing Company’s best selling beer. First brewed in the summer of ’98, the “Hippie” has become a Cleveland classic among hop lovers. Reminiscent of ales brewed on the Pacific west coast, the Hippie I.P.A. is big, rich in malt and chock full of hops. American malts are used in the grain bill, including pale ale, crystal, dextrin malt and torrified wheat. It is hopped five times with a combination of Northern Brewer and Cascade. After fermentation, hops are added “dry” to impart bold hop aroma. The Hippie starts at 1.068 and is 80 IBU’s.

Very hoppy smell, rich amber color, HOPPY and unbalanced, If you want hops this beer has them for you. Not the most easy drinking brew but it will shock your taste buds.

cloudy yet bright orange/golden amber color. gushing frothy rocky off white head. aroma is deep hop and pine resin but not too strong. I thought that I was being fooled by the crate of clementines next to my glass, but there really was a little tangerine peel in this aroma. flavor is strong hop, bitter and resiny. extremely high carbonation and crazy frothy lacing. mostly bitter aftertaste like chicory greens.

Pours a lightly hazy deep copper to amber color beer, it is topped by a frothy tan head with amber highlights. The aroma has a sweet, almost sticky caramelized citrus note to it; with both a solid malt and hop contribution. I get notes of tangerine, candied orange peel, and something akin to a caramel glazed bready character.

The body of this beer has a certain heft to it, which coats the palate and lingers a bit without being cloying. There is a solid malty sweetness here, and it is in good balance with the hop levels. That is to say that this is a bit on the tame side, at least hop wise, for an IPA. The combination of the malt sweetness and the flavorful hop additions give this beer a sort of hop nectar type note. There are notes of orange, tangerine, floral nectar, . The beer finishes with a solid bitter contribution that has a hint of astringent hop character along with a lingering caramelized orange note.

This beer is very well balanced for an IPA, lots of hops of course, but also a substantial malt profile that is noticeable in its own right. This beer is quite nice, though it is a little to sweet and malty to be quaffable, it is an easy sipping beer that allows me to slowly work my way through this 22oz bottle.

Pours a light brown color, hues of red come through. Small white head. Aroma is muddled, spruce, caramel, roasted malt. Flavor starts bitter and goes into a very sweet roasted malt thing. Cherries, toffee and a little cofeee.

Pours to a hazy bronzed mahogany body with a large offwhite head and picture perfect lacing. The aroma is sprucey, caramel, oranges, butter. The flavor is really toasted malts. Buttered bread, grassy hops, sweet malts, light bitterness. Really nice flavor but not really IPA like. The palate is medium bodied, light oily bitterness, good mouthfeel. I would call this a Strong Ale, not an IPA.

Dark turbid amber, thick off white head. Nice complex nose of spruce, pine resin, candied lemon and grapefruit, with a good dose of buttery caramel malt. Hop flavors are razor sharp up front with more spruce and pine initially, some citrus plays out in the middle, with a rich caramel malt providing good balance. Medium bodied, yet slightly thin, light carbonation, bittersweet hoppy finish. Good stuff for sure...

Dark amber and orange body. The head is slightly yellowish. The aroma is caramel and oranges. This comes across as relatively sweet. The taste is bitter oranges and almonds. There is also some toast. Fairly well balanced. Bottle recieved in a trade with OhioDad.
