Commercial Description:
The Hippie I.P.A. continues to be the Buckeye Brewing Company’s best selling beer. First brewed in the summer of ’98, the “Hippie” has become a Cleveland classic among hop lovers. Reminiscent of ales brewed on the Pacific west coast, the Hippie I.P.A. is big, rich in malt and chock full of hops. American malts are used in the grain bill, including pale ale, crystal, dextrin malt and torrified wheat. It is hopped five times with a combination of Northern Brewer and Cascade. After fermentation, hops are added “dry” to impart bold hop aroma. The Hippie starts at 1.068 and is 80 IBU’s.

First let me say this is more DIPA territorry than IPA. Big fragrant swirling aroma of hops. Looks pretty appealing in the glass. Streams of fine sparkling carbonation. Fine medium thickness alabaster head leaves friendly rings for lacing. Bitter soap first sip. Followed by a taste bud impact of rototilling palate. Nasty rudeness, more nasty than most other IPAs. A personality you cannot get tired of. Lets mix green grapefruit rinds and dish soap in the blender for a healthy drink. Oily coating, but still glad to have tried it. $5 per bomber at the Vintage. On the finish, the linger stays with you like the refridgerator that won’t shut off in the middle of the night.

22 oz bottle. Nice pour -- I don’t know why but I was surprised by the relatively dark color of this, rusty reddish brown with a nice head. The aroma is damn near perfect -- like a northwestern hop farm, but nice and even and not too overpowering. And this drinks with a pleasant citrus-pine roundness and a full-up malt undertow. Don’t know why my expectations were low, but this beer far exceeded them and more. (#3556, 5/27/2009)

Interesting dusty nose, some grainy malt, h, and light r, and some sour citrus notes. Orange brown pour, no head. Sweet malt forward beer with piney resins on the back end. Oddly malty and sugary. Maybe a bad batch. I will have to revisit.

Our friend Travis brought this one from out of state to a party. Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark orange-brown color with a trace of a white head. The aroma was fairly strong fruity and piney hops. The flavor was sour, tangy and nutty with light caramel and moderate fruity and floral hops dominating. The finish was long, sour and bitter fruity hops. The mouthfeel was fairly thick. Nice.

Pours a hazy orange with two fingers of fluffy head. Nose is light, floral, little bit of citrus. Slight caramel taste and stickiness, but primarily a dry finish.

22oz bottle. Pours a cloudy glowing orange color with a one finger thick off white head, light lacing. Nose of citrus, herbs and resin with light roasted and caramel malts. As this beers sits it seems to open up with more floral and citrus notes. Finish held assertive bitterness with some sweet malts to balance it out. Medium stickiness on the palate.

bottle- may have been a bit old, because slightly oxidized flavors were beginning to come through- but, the foundations of a great beer were evident- still had a nice hop fresh bite to it, and a very drinkable malt base.

This poured a hazy orange color with an off white head. Aroma was of citrusy and piney hops, pretty abundant and really makes me want to take the first sip. Flavor was disappointing compared to the aroma. It was bland and sweet with hints of the citrus and pine that mgiht have been a few months ago but not anymore. This was on tap at the beer engine thoguh, so it should definately have been fresh.
