Commercial Description:
The Hippie I.P.A. continues to be the Buckeye Brewing Company’s best selling beer. First brewed in the summer of ’98, the “Hippie” has become a Cleveland classic among hop lovers. Reminiscent of ales brewed on the Pacific west coast, the Hippie I.P.A. is big, rich in malt and chock full of hops. American malts are used in the grain bill, including pale ale, crystal, dextrin malt and torrified wheat. It is hopped five times with a combination of Northern Brewer and Cascade. After fermentation, hops are added “dry” to impart bold hop aroma. The Hippie starts at 1.068 and is 80 IBU’s.

Bottle from Rockinout. Light amber with very minimal head, even though pouring in the middle of the glass. Nice touch of malt for an IPA, not overwhelming but more of a presence than most West coast IPAs I’m used to. Hops are quite bitter, but without much vibrant taste. A bit soapy. Body is almost creamy....Overall, just seems a bit off for an IPA. But, enjoyable enough.

22oz bomber @ Coles Buffalo NY. Piney hops are exploited here. Decent nose nothing extraordinary. Somewhat malty, no hop explosion here as I would prefer. But a nice but underwhelming IPA

Pours a slightly hazy, rusty orange-brown color. A large, fizzy, off-white head deflates quickly and disappears completely. Absolutely no lacing noted. The aroma is really heavy on toasted grains, with stale caramel and almost no discernible hops. The flavor is dominated by those same dry, toasted grains with bitter, stale grapefruit hops. The body is on the lighter side of medium and grossly over carbonated. Finishes dry and harshly astringent. Horrible beer. Possibly a bad bottle.

22oz bomber via trade courtesy of crizay. Pours a clear brown-ish copper with big off white head. The aroma is grapefruit, orange juice, orange rind, a hint of pine, a bit of earthiness and light malt sweetness. The flavor starts with bitter grapefruit hops that slowly turn to sweeter orange juice citrus hops and sweet malts. Into the finish the grapefruit bitterness builds some and rides into the after taste along with orange rind and malt sweetness. Spot on IPA.

10-31-07 bottle. Very nice IPA. Strong bitterness with a creamy finish. A bit soapy - but I don’t mind it in this IPA. Crisp up front and creamy end. Nice, rich hoppy aroma.

Big thanks to miketd for the bottle
Rich cloudy honey color with a sudsy sticky white head and nice lacing. Smell is nicely hopped, with some noticeable malt playing in as well. Hints of apple as it sits a while. Crisp and biting carbonation initially with a nicely equally crisp hop flavor and bitterness, and finishes with a smooth creamy maltiness as it goes down. Nice thickish body, yet with very active carbonation. Exceptionally well balanced. For a standard IPA this is near perfect for me. Crisp, yet creamy, mostly hoppy, yet amply malty with a nice level of bitterness. Finishes with a great balance. Thanks for this one!

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber color with a med-sized off-white head. Good bit of citrus in the aroma, with some floral notes and a little malt poking through. Citrus and pine dominate the taste, but come across somewhat weak. Some bitterness, but fades rapidly. Decent IPA.

bottle. pours a hazy honey color with a thin white head that fades to a film and laces nicely. smell is fairly stronger caramel malt than i expected, mixed with some nuts, a bit of berries, and a hint of floral sprucey hops. the hops come out a lot more in the taste, which is dominated by a pretty strong floral character. fairly low carbonation and an almost creamy mouthfeel work well with a medium-bitter finish. an interesting and different ipa that i’ll drink again if i get the chance.
