rudolf (1734), Buffalo, New York, USA Oct 21, 2004 Mapley nose, some soy. Sweet soy explosion. Maple. Green hops are there but hidden well behind the maple. Wow. Wish I had more than a tiny sample of this IPFreely (1470), Lewiston, New York, USA Sep 26, 2004 On tap, Pizza Plant, Williamsville NY. Tap handle said Baltic Porter, but I can’t imagine it being something different. Pours very dark, creamy brown head which faded fast but never completely went away. Sweet aroma, lots of molasses, vanilla, and a bit of caramel. Sweet, but complex flavor. Dark fruits, a bit of alcohol, molasses again, vanilla, caramel, and some light roast. Body was smooth, not very big, but kind of velvety. Alcohol was an afterthought. Top notch stuff. jsquire (2087), St. Marys, Ohio, USA Mar 27, 2004 On tap at the brewery. Black beer in the snifter with a creamy brown head that faded into an everlasting ring. Very thick body (and very sticky on the outside of the glass). The nose was molasses, alcohol and faint cardboard. So many complex flavors in this well balanced brew. I got butterscotch, molasses, vanilla, oak, and dried fruit (almost like a fruitcake). The finish ends up with faint coffee beans. And my mom liked it, too. Rockinout (945), Kent, Ohio, USA Mar 24, 2004 Tap @ Buckeye Brewing 3-20-04. Pitch black, little tan head, mild anise in the aroma. Sweet and smooth, alcohol well hidden. Clings to the glass. Oh yeah. JasonG (700), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Feb 18, 2004 Dark black color, dark brown head. Aroma has chocolate notes, a hint of coffee. Flavor is pretty smooth, especially for a high abv brew. Malty overall, slightly bitter with a touch of sweetness at the finish. A nice brew bkelley68 (467), Lakewood, Ohio, USA Feb 13, 2004 Black with deep Mahogany notes. Great mocha colored head. Silky smooth and full of lush chocolate and carmel malt flavors. Light hints of alcohol start warming you up about half way through the snifter. Not overbearing and easy to nip at. Garin may be on to something with this one with a little fine tuning. Drew (2406), Kent, Ohio, USA Feb 1, 2004 What a cool idea - Imperial Porter. Served in a snifter - a rich black/brown body topped with a small milk chocolate colored head; lacing was great. Tasty combination of flavors and aromas - chocolate, caramel, plum, roast coffee, vanilla. Very smooth and full flavored, yet not overly thick. Finish was dry with some lingering sweetness. Sinfully easy to drink - didn't even notice the 9.5% abv. kujo9 (1077), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA Jan 29, 2004 Updated: Jan 31, 2004Dark Brown/black liquid w/a tan lasting head. Laces well. Chocolate malt to start then gets roasty and caramel as it warms. Light fruitiness and alochol present in aroma which becomes lightly solventy as it warms. Light hints of vanilla. Chocolate and roast are almost in equal proportions to start the flavor; Caramel malt as it warms. Very well balanced and has a light hop flavor in the finish. Seems to have very little fruitiness and finish is also on the dry side w/ a light roasty aftertaste. Light medium body gets more full as the beer warms, and until it does there's a light acidic bite from the medium carbonation. Becomes much smoother as it warms and has a light warming from the alcohol. Very interesting beer to say the least. Overall a much better beer warmer than when chilled and I'd like to see this beer on a nitro tap.
