kujo9 (1044), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA Aug 6, 2004 Draft @ Buckeye: Coppery brown w/ a lasting off white head of froth foam. Munich malt aroma as well as smoked malt w/ a light raisiny/vinous character. Very malty aroma as it warms, also bready w/ just a hint of roast. Flavor is malty but well balanced at the start. Munich malt flavor and a very subtle but noticeable smokey flavor. A little hop flavor in the finish & aftertaste, but more so in the aftertaste which is also quite smokey. There is a light bitterness that sneaks into the aftertaste as well. A little caramel and roast between start and finish. Medium carbonation, medium body, well hidden alcohol a light warmth, but dry m/f. Could be a little smoother for doppel, but not a big flaw. A little more evenly balanced and not quite as sweet as the original Frankenbock. The smokey character give it a little extra kick and complexity. I’m not one for smoked beers, but the smokiness is noticeable, but does not dominate the beer. I like it!!!!!
