Commercial Description:
Extra American Stout. A robust and stronger version of a dry stout, highly hopped for bitterness, aroma and flavor. Has a intense " burnt currant " character. Full bodied, it is dark copper to black in color. The high gravity leads to notable esters and fruitiness. Alcoholic strength is evident. Rich maltiness. The roastiness melds with smoky, burnt, fruity, estery notes and alcohol flavors. There is a hint of cocoa. 50 IBU

Growler. Pours dark brown with a nice full tan head. Aroma of toasted malts, toffee, a hint of chocolate. Taste is a bit thin: toasty malts, coffee, caramel, hint of alcohol. Palate is a bit oily. Nice bitter coffee aftertaste.

On tap at Buffalo Brewing Co. Brown with some ruby highlights and a thin tan head that dissipates into a layer of pond scum. Aroma of roasted malt, toffee and dark fruit, not what I expected and a bit tough to put my finger on what’s all in here. Taste of roasted malt, toffee, dark fruit, licorice and bubblegum. Palate is mildly sticky and it finishes up a bit dry. An odd lot, this one, but overall interesting and not too shabby.

Pint draft at the brewpub. Roasty malt aroma, full of chocolate sweetness, faint coffee and smoky grains, some light toffee here as well. Impenetrable black color, head is light tan and fading. Powerful, roasty malt flavor, hints of plum amidst the dark chocolate and light background sweetness, some coffee also present, along with faint black cherry and moderate bitterness and a touch of esters and hop spice late. Thick and smooth on the palate, low-moderate level of effervescence, body is full. Satisfying.

Tap at the brewpub. The body was black with a yellowish khaki head. The aroma was sweet molasses with some milk chocolate. There was some rich caramel. The taste was coffee and dark chocolate. A heavy body with lots of alcohol coming through and a nice roasted, burnt finish. Interesting.

Tasted 1/2/09. Pint from the brew pub. Dark pitch hue with a trace ring of beige head. Aromas of cocoa, toffee and cola. Full bodied and bitter. Big malty character. Good palate with notes of dark fruits. Well done.

Pours very dark with a small tan head. The aroma has dark malt, raisin / fig, cream, chocolate that’s between dark and milk, roasted malt that is not bitter at all. Medium / full rich lush body with fairly soft carbonation. The flavor starts with roasted dark malt, some bitter char, dates and spicy / earthy hops. The finish has spicy hops and gentle char that’s smooth. There is a bit of anise in there as well. A very well made stout from Buffalo.
