Draft. A pitch black beer with a red shine under a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of roasted malt - leaving a slight acidity. The flavor is sweet with primary notes of roasted malt, but also with hints of acidity. I find it boring.

Sampler at the Bull & Bush Pub & Brewery, Denver 11/10/2007 Coffee roast aroma. Small beige head. Black very smooth on the palate and slightly fruity with some bitterness and dryness in a coffee roast finish.

On tap at the brewpub on 10/12/07: Transparent dark mahogany with a nicely-lacing tan head. Roasty malt and toasted caramel aroma with a touch of earthy hops. Body starts with a light caramel malty sweetness and decent bittering hoppy balance toward a nice dark chocolate roasty finish. A good stout.

Draught at the brewery. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, chocolate, husks). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Ok, but not very inspiring or special.

On tap at Bull and Bush poured a clear black with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, light fruittiness and a hint of vanilla. Palate was light to medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of roasted malt, dark chocolate, light coffee and a hint of vanilla with a smooth lingering roasty finish.

Draught at brewery. Pours black with a small frothy light brown head, mostly diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (coffee, roasted), light hops (grass), average yeast (sweat, leather) with notes of smoke, tar and charcoal. Full bodied, oily texture, flat carbonation and a bitter finish. Short duration, light sweetness, acidity and bitterness with a sour milk flavor.

A nicely balanced stout, with an interesting mixture of chocolate sweetness, roasted malt character, and a light bit of tartness - sweet up front, followed by a medium dry middle and finish - a touch of diacetyl, but the bitterness and tartness keep it fairly subdued, keeping it just present enough to make this stout taste "very british" - decent.
