kramer (2406), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 25, 2009 On tap, at brewery. Pours a clear dark amber to orangish body with a small tight bubbled off-white head. The nose shows lots of citrusy and resiny hops over what smells to be a rather hefty toasted and caramel malt base. Nicely balanced flavor, leans a bit to the hops side, but there’s certainly plenty of chewy malt backing it up. Finishes with a modeately bitter resiny hop note that lingers well. Really pretty nice, I could have a few of these if I didn’t have to drive home! CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Mar 12, 2009 Pours a transparent copper amber with a clingy-lacing off-white head. Aroma of big resiny assertive grapefruity hops and toasty caramel sweetness. Starts with good fullness and rich sweet toasty caramel with a clean resiny grapefruity hop character. Finishes smooth and bittersweet. A top notch double red loaded with hops, yet well-balanced. Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Mar 1, 2009 Draft at the brewpub. Pours a dark amber body with a tan lacing. Has a nice pine and citrus aroma, some sweet and tart grapefruit. Nice hoppy bite with citrus and more grapefruit to finish. Great beer. CharlesDarwin (1822), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA Mar 1, 2009 On tap at the brewpub. Strong nose in pollen fresh hop-resin, strong leaf and a crisp edge of malt caramel. Nice. Pours a clearish red, with a tall finger of creamy off-white. Flavor is in-line with the aroma. There’s a bubbly fresh hop character, cascading into some toothier caramels. The warrior hop character is flavor forward, without too much blinding hop heat. The alcohol melds in well. There’s lots of juicy fruit as a result, tangerine, kumquat and some lime. It’s a very nice beer and surprisingly drinkable for the level of malt and hop. I might like a little more malt support, though. Otherwise, excellent! tronraner (1905), Maryville, Tennessee, USA Feb 23, 2009 Draught at the brewpub. Pours amber with beige head. The aroma is lots of dried fruits and herbal tea, hints of toffee and cotton candy. The flavor is fruity hops, grapefruit, pineapple, orange, pine. Some caramel, honey, and toast characterize the malts. Mediu-bitter finish that leaves a piney aftertaste. Pretty good.
