| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 21, 2009 The morning sky is rising while dew glistens like liquid jewels frozen in time. A gentle murmur of early birds and lingering crickets can be heard ringing clearly through the sacred silence. But wait? Is that the croak of a bullfrog I hear? And why does it seem to emanate from my beer glass in hand? Why, that would be because I have before me the Old Treehugger Ale from the Bullfrog Brewery. Whoever said originality is dead obviously hasn’t paid much attention to breweries and their names for beers. Tongue-in-cheek humor has never sounded nor tasted so good. A brand new brewery for me, it is time to sit back, savor the sunrise, silence the chirping of some bullfrogs, and in this case, they better not taste like chicken.
A cloudy earthen brown, the perfect hiding place for some mischievous bullfrogs, sets the tone as a rather brash head of foam slowly fades into a thin film. She swirls up nicely, leaving thicker clumps while a staunch ring loiters. My first whiff of her nose is replete with spice and lots of earthy notes; bark, trees, and damp potting soil. Filling her out further are caramelized sugars, caramel, peanut brittle, and more spice to top it all off. Most intriguing indeed. My first sip sends me on a scavenger hunt for some bugs because my mouth is a-pucker with a noticeable sour funk. Not noticeable in her nose at all, she bares all to taste in her palate. A thin mouthfeel lends itself well to all kinds of earthy, woodsy, buggy notes. Barnyard funk, dusty stalls, bales of hay, cracked leather, and wood. Definitely different and not what I was expecting. That being said, I couldn’t be any more pleased with my Treehugger Ale from Bullfrog Brewery. From start to finish, one pleasing funkalicious surprise after the other.
You know that look? Yes, that one. The one I always get when I talk so endearingly, nay lovingly, about the insatiable pleasures of bugged beer that is bursting with tart, earthy, barnyard flavors. While it may sound questionable, I assure you there may be no better quaffing delight. The next time you stumble across an Olde Treehugger Ale or some other sour ale, do not be afraid, and discover the delights of sour ales which have been pleasing palates for, quite literally, hundreds of years.
