CharlesDarwin (1406), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 29, 2008 On tap at the brewpub. Aroma is a rich, dense wildfire and roast malt. A good balance between lively crackling smoke and dense chewy malt sugars right off the bat. Pours a deep black-brown with a twinge of brown and rim in tan. Flavor is a compact, stout smokiness fresh and rich. Paler woods are burning and bark elicits a tawny character in the porter. There’s some higher alcohol fruits that come back with smoked salmon, cheese and barbeque. A very nice smoked beer integrated malt and fire. Everything could have a touch more complexity and ease of drinking, but otherwise this is a very good example.
nearbeer (1317), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jul 14, 2008 Draft at the brewpub. Opaque black with a small but lasting head. Aroma is smoke, caramel, slight cocoa and coffee. Flavor is a great mix of the same. Medium body is smooth and nicely balanced between sticky and dry. TomDecapolis (2472), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 7, 2008 On tap at the brewery. Pours a deep black with a medium creamy tan head that laced. Aroma of beef jerky, campfire smoke, roasted nuts and light chocolate. Flavor of smoked meats, campfire, chocolate, some coffee and nuts. kmweaver (2118), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Jun 13, 2008 Draft @ Bullfrog. Pours a dark chocolate brown color; brown at the edges; medium tan head with fine-bubbled lacing. Solid presence of smoke (smoked meats, maple ham) in the aroma; nicely developed smoke character with some coffee and chocolate malts underneath. Medium mouthfeel: lots of well-developed smokiness (smoked meat, beef jerky), a touch of spiciness, and some roasted, chocolatey notes; very well done smoke character, and quite drinkable. Lengthy finish: breadiness, smoked malts, and some chocolate. Glouglouburp (1997), Montreal, Quebec, Canada May 12, 2008 In short: A basic smoked fruity porter. Kind of “off” IMHO.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Black body with a medium tan head.
In long: Nose is medium smoky. Taste is roasted malts, roasted wood. In the back I got a light flavour of ripe banana dipped in chocolate?!? Body is a bit thinner than I would have liked. Something didn’t work with the hopping, weird fruity hops finish that just didn’t sit well with the rest of the beer. I liked the smoked woody malts profile but the weird fruity hops ruined it. Really disappointing, Bullcrap Smoked Porter.
