ciderguy (97), Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 18, 2003 Aroma is slightly dull wih a bit of a musty smell. Color is very light yellow with a sizable head when first poured. This is actually one of the few ciders I've had which actually sustains some resemblance of a head also. Its tast is light and mildly aged. Its smooth and not terribly filling like many ciders. Pleasant aftertaste resembling crsip apple juices and perhaps perry. So far, of the all Strongbow's out there, this one is my favorite. Cheers to mutant for sending this one my way all the way from Aussie-land.
motelpogo (4124), Plzen, Czech Republic Feb 9, 2007 bottled. yellowish and fizzy, apple cordial aromas, gets up your nose a bit, oversweet and with a nasty methoish taste pyrotim2000 (13), Australia Nov 26, 2006 Apart from the other Strongbow varieties this is the only cider I’ve ever tried - and I like it. It has a nice bitter taste. When I poured it I got absolutely no head and the colour left a lot to be desired. But once it goes into the mouth it’s very nice. ALLOVATE (1127), Perth, Australia Aug 13, 2005 Tried this one after quaffing its bland brother ’Sweet’ and wondering where the cider part came in. Tasted from the bottle and poured into a tall stein. Transparent pale yellowish straw with soda like carbonation, so light and irregular I thought it was still. Overly subtle tinny and unclean acidic apple nose. The aroma of the ’Sweet’ was light on yet this was almost non-existent. Sweeeeetttt in the mouth, but in a table sugar way that doesn’t sit well with any apple flavoured bevvie. Light apple note, yet liquor is really all you have with this one, like an over attenuated kit cider from your local super market. Finish is crisp and only lengthened by a subtle gluggy pear note. Thin in body, gassy and lifeless one-dimensional cider that lacks in all aspects. Ready-To-Drink poser poison, and for Highlandlad, unusually and questionably this one was sweeter than the ’Sweet’. Macro swill indeed. (Strongbow Original, 5.0%) highlandlad (1200), Sydney, Australia Aug 9, 2005 Another sugary macro cider. Very pale in the glass, with lively carbonation. The aroma is inviting for a commercial cider - a nice crisp balance of sour and sweet apple. As Aarleks points out, there are also oaky chardonnay notes. (The Scarborough chardonnay from the Hunter Valley springs to mind.) This is much sweeter on the tongue than the aroma suggests. It has that granular sugary Coca-Cola mouthfeel that personally I loathe in sweet ciders. Holy crap, if this is in the middle of Strongbow’s sweetness scale, their sweet cider must dissolve teeth. Their is some crisp apple acidity in there but it’s buried under a mountain of sugar. (Bottle - Strongbow Original Alcoholic Cider, CUB) Aarleks (402), Sydney, Australia Feb 20, 2005 Bottle (now called "Strongbow Original" with no mention of Bulmer on the bottle - I’ve emailed the admins): Clear pale yellow/gold with a slight green tinge. Flabby, vinous, sweet apple aroma with some spicey chardonay-like aromas and slight sulphury sourness. Striaghtforward sweet apple flavour with slight buttery diacetyl tones on the edges. A little cloying and probably needs a touch more acidity to balance it out.
