Commercial Description:
Cask; Special (Gold Medal Ale series) - September 2008.

Gold Medal Ales are produced monthly in recognition of some of the ’greats’ of history. This month’s story :-
Light house keeper, William Darling and his daughter Grace were on duty on the North East Coast when the drifting S.S. orfarshire struck rocks and broke up in heavy seas. At 5.OOam on the 7th of September 1838 Grace spotted survivors on Big Harcar Rock and she and her father rowed to their rescue through heavy seas and high winds. Eight survivors were brought to safety by an exhausted Grace. Both father and daughter were awarded gold gallantry medals with Grace becoming Britain’s greatest heroine, only to die four years later, aged only 26, of T.B.

Cask handpull at The Phoenix, Canterbury. Copper, thin off white head. Quite a yeasty bitter, some toffee. It’s a fairly standard bitter, but with good flavours. Rather nice to be honest.

Cask conditioned at The Woolpack, Banbury. Red amber with white head. Whew, a different experience to Druncan’s on this one, the joys of Real Ale i suppose. Anyway, mine was malty and dry in body, fairly straightforward but fully flavoured and bitter with a heavyish, flowery hop. Quite reasonable.

Cask, The Crown, Nuneaton. Stroke of Labrador aroma. Some musty hop and caramel coming through as it warms. Tired hops, marzipan and caramel almost like a clear-bottled pasteurised Bateman’s effort. Some dank beansprouty notes in there. Not great, but drinkable.
