First impression is that smell more like a Barley Wine than a IIPA. Pours a slightly hazy orange with a small white head. Lots of caramel up front with a hint of banana bread. Moderate citrus hopped finish with a touch of oxidation and a hint of alcohol. I see the first rating is from May, but this really tastes more like a Barley Wine that’s been aged for more than 5 months, rather than a 5 month old IIPA. | 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Sep 21, 2006 Updated: Feb 12, 200722 OZ Bottle via Liquid Solutions. Pours a hazy dark amber color with a small bubble filled head. Aroma is fruity and a bit yeasty, with orange, pear, a little butterscotch and a bit of alcohol. And yes, this is one of those that tastes just like it smells with some added resiny pine....yummy stuff!
Starts out with some molasses and butterscotch, then some orange, pear, and grapefruit, and finishes with an alcohol laden caramel/grapefruit/pine team that is well balanced and works together. Very malty finish but the hops come back to haunt nicely in the aftertaste. Nice bitter/bittersweet aftertaste that lingers just the right amount of time. Is full bodied, almost but not quite syrupy, and well carbonated and very smooth for a Double IPA. This is a great 10th anniversary Imperial IPA! What that mess called Stone 10th should have been... | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 20, 2006 22oz bomber. Thick and nearly syrup like pour, I love that gulp sound intoo the glass. The first flavor is a punch, and the alcohol is very apparent in this beer. I would say it is less balanced than other IIPA’s (which contradicts some other reviews). Even the burp tastes like alcohol. This is a good beer and certainly I would buy it again, but not nearly my favorite of the hop inspired segment. Rastacouere (5565), Montréal, Quebec, Canada
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 20, 2006 Very clear orange pour with minimal white head. Plenty of crystal malts procure and sugary biscuity maltiness over which the not so aromatic oily, thick, orangey hops evolve. Light citrus and more prominent earthiness and soft pine make up for the eventual aromatic that show up once the beer is in mouth, but they went stronger on the bittering than finishing parts as the beer is quite bitter. Fortunately, it has the malt to stand it up, its medium body is firm and almost sticky. Straightforward, obviously Californian malty I2PA. calivania (62), USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 20, 2006 A worthy example of this style -- a favorite for beer’ofiles who need something a little extreme just to get an eyebrow up. More balanced then other Double I’s, with the chewy fully baked sweetness cut nicely by a wood chop of super dry hops-- if anything this errs towards the sweet, but that is a nice surprise. One is always bracing for the Jet Li kcik of bitterness with this style -- here instead it is the alcohol that is lurking around the corner, ready to knife you. A true and honest interpretation.
