| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 4, 2004 Mostly clear and deep red with brown; big and foamy head lasts. Fresh and toasty nose. Smooth, soft and creamy texture. Mild notes of aromatic chocolate, roasted toffee, toasted bread and brown sugar. Nicely balanced. Grassy hops with a hint of spicy orange. Decent bitterness. While it didn’t smack me in the face with flavor, it was a real pleasurable beer to drink. I’d surely have another. Ernest (4511), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Nov 4, 2004 Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is lightly malty (roasted nuts, toasted bread), lightly hoppy (resin), with light notes of juniper, anise, and allspice. Flavor is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Blah, this needs a serious malt injection; very unbalanced in the flavor profile...far too attenuated. Ok aroma, but ultimately not worth wasting my liver and brain cells on. Hab40oz (242), Grants Pass, Oregon, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 3, 2004 pours a dark blood red color, nice thick foamy head, malty grain aroma, kinda sweet with a little bit of hops, the taste is very zesty, tart, with good hop presence and very smooth and rich. beerinmarch (2829), Washington, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 2, 2004 This winter offering pours dark red, almost black with a tall ivory head. strong toasty malt taste, lightly hopped with a bit of spice, maybe nutmeg. I think there are some faint hints of coffee in the start, a bit roasty. This brew finishes with more bitterness than hoppy taste, with spices lingering on long after. A very dry, chalky finish with hints of molasses and orangepeel. envane (251), Evanston, Illinois, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Feb 22, 2004 Very assertive for a brown ale. Nice roasted aroma. Flavour is nutty/roasty, and fairly bitter, bitter finish. As other have commented, the flaw is its thin palate. Still drinkable. erway (1002), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Dec 12, 2003 Pours dark brown with a big fluffy head that quickly disappears. Smell of burnt hazelnuts and toffee with no sign of any hops or spices. They try to cover over the off flavors in this but they fail. Not enough hop aroma and the alcohol, while it is not particularly high, is way too apparent. A pour offering by a fairly good brewery. jazz88 (2239), San Francisco, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 8, 2003 Bottle. Dark brown color with a tan head. A nutty and toasted grain aroma (it smells like the wet grain bag in a homebrew batch). The flavor has caramel, nuts, and malts but little spice.
