Commercial Description:
Buzzards Bay Brewing’s Alt is the South Coast’s take on a German classic. Brewed with copious amounts of German malts and hops, our Alt is a well-balanced copper hued old-world ale. Like all Alts, ours toes the line between two worlds. It’s brewed with an ale yeast, but it is treated like a lager. It is fermented and cellared at a colder temperature, for a longer time than most ales. The result is a clean, drinkable beer with a very light and warming estery aroma that accents the earthy Hallertau hops added late in the boil. We hope you enjoy our Alt as the weather turns colder. Cheers and prosit!

Brownish orange pour. Smells fresh with some aging hops. Bland watery taste with a little grain taste. Not impressive.

"Reserve" bottle thanks to cavie. Pours with a clear amber body and a light white head. Aroma of faint hops, caramel and sweet malt. Taste is caramel, sweet and lightly grassy. Very sweet finish. Light bubbles.

Poured from bottle into Summit Pint glass. Clear brownish-copper with very thin head. Aroma of cherry, plum, biscuit, citrus and spice. Smells good but definitely subdued. Just slightly sweet cherry and biscuit malts countered by a spicy noble hop bitterness. Relatively low carbonation for a German brew. Smooth and clean but a little watery. Finishes somewhat dry. Fairly mild and pleasing Altbier, although not as complex as some others.

This one came in my beer club. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured an orange-caramel color with a medium sized orange-cream head. The aroma was faintly malty, lightly fruity and a touch yeasty. The flavor was dry, bitter and nutty with moderate fruity and floral hops and a touch of caramel. The finish was short, tangy and fruity. Medium body. Ok.

12 oz. shared bottle with a beer club member as one of his latest brews by mail. The color was a clear amber with modest, off white foam to the head and light streaks and spots of lacing. The aroma was immediately Pils and Munich/ German malt notes, with a touch of light yeast and some graininess. The flavor was a light bitter and dry combo with enough malt to support. Nothing fancy, just a light, crisp, sessionable brew.

12 oz bottle (Beer of the month beer thanks to Pam). Nothing too special on the aroma, but a good amount of creamy sweet fruit candy sugars, also pale grain malts, some caramel, and grassy hops. Some wispy white head on the pour, but nothing too enticing with a amber red color, and fairly light appearing body. Not as much candy sweetness in the flavor, but definitely has a distinct sugary feel to it. Light flavors overall and not unbalanced, just some of the flavors seem slightly off, or just don’t go perfectly together. Other notes similar to the aroma, but they muddle together a bit. Overall, this beer showed some promise in areas, but just didn’t come together perfectly well in the end. That said, its still not a bad beer, and is quite drinkable with some decent flavor floating around.

Bottle via Bonster. This beer hit me from the start as cotton candy liquified. Nose was candy sugar and a touch of malt. Seemed to be pulling in many separate diredctions. Wavy body is supersaurated with candi sugar to the point that I strained to identify much else. I tried to like you....really.

Bottle from BOM club. Pours a copper- brown with a thin head that quickly dissipates. Subtle aroma of malt and some dark fruits. Flavor is mostly cherry and biscuit malt followed by the faint spice of hops. Quite crisp, light to medium bodied yet a bit creamy. Very drinkable and enjoyable overall. Smooth and well balanced. I wish this one wasn’t a limited release, go for it guys!
