Commercial Description:
Pasteurised nitro-keg and nitro-can beer.
"A smooth, creamy ale." Introduced in 1994 as a 4.8% Irish Ale by Bass at Caffrey's Ulster brewery, and promoted strongly with an advertising campaign of "strong words softly spoken". Interbrew took over in 2000, soften the recipe and attempted to catch the lager market, using a new promotion of "a storm brewing". Coors acquired the brand in 2002. Initially contract brewed by Interbrew for Coors at Ulster, the brand eventually moved to Coor's Tower Brewery in Tadcaster.

Draft at Novitel London Tower Bridge. An okay beer for a bitter. An ale taste. Not convinced.

Aaargh. Was not expectign the lack of carbonation, but Piscator set me straight by explaining that this was a "NitrO" beer. Thanks to Piscator for the opportunity to try this one.

Overall, not too bad. Pours nice and creamy, however, Caffreys loses some points with me due to excessive gassiness. Drink too many pints of this stuff and I promise you’ll get a headache. All things aside, for a macrobrewed cream ale, it’s not too bad.

Canned sample. Light amber in colour with nitro carbonation. Fairly estery aroma, along with notes of light malt, grapes, and a bit of vanilla. A bit more fruit in the mouth (apple pie, cherries), caramel, and a bit of a sharp woody flavor on the finish. Watery body. A fairly blah canned bitter.

Very drinkable beer. Golden amber colour with generous creamy head. Will not win any popularity contest, but solid contender.

Reddish golden amber with creamy white head. Bitter dry copper like smell and taste.

440ml can. Noisy when opened. Deep amber in colour with a thick, but small white head. Lacing on the glass. Satisfying malty aroma. Flavour has hints of malt and bitterness but is mostly destroyed by the beer’s creamy smoothness. Easy to drink and quite refreshing.

Can 0,44l. Brown golden colour. Lasting small creamy head. Quite pretty. Fruity taste with hits of caramel. A cautios bitter aftertaste. Very "smooth".
