Cake, Battenberg and butter aroma. Slimy palate with butter, almond and watery Black Forest notes. Butter biscuit afters, trickle of plum. Thin flimsy roast on the end. I know its a house Cally thing, but the butter’s a bit much for me here and isn’t something I’m looking for in a beer (Oatmeal Stout??) labelled ’Double Dark’. Notes of a stronger beer without the body or substance to back it. Disappointing festival opener.

If I’d tried this in a blind tasting I’d have identified it as a mild! Sweet and buttery, so obviously from the Caley stable. thebeertourist (2793), Oslo, Norway

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Nov 7, 2009 Cask pint at JDW Newcastle. Pours dark, slightly viscous, drinks with a honey like sweetness, some whisky and malt flavours, finishes quite bizaarly, I can’t quite put my finger on what it is but it’s odd. Ok stout with an unusual but not unpleasant level of sweetness. hughie (3055), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England
