phukktifano (159), Richmond, Virginia, USA Apr 25, 2009 Amber red with a thin white head. Aroma is wood, nut with a hint of dark fruit. Flavor is the same. NachlamSie (1630), Tennessee, USA Mar 18, 2009 [march 15, 2009]
Pint at the brewpub. Pours a clear ruby with a decent head. The aroma is sweet and nutty with hints at toffee and woody hops. Slick palate. Just a bit of smoke finally comes out in the finish, giving it a tasty meaty finish. Berries and toffee are the main focus with the hops and smoke playing second fiddle. dkachur (2316), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Nov 27, 2008 From a sampler at the brewpub. Poursa ruby red color color, clear, with a thin head. Aroma is weak with nutty and slightly
vegetal notes. Taste is earthy with nutty notes, toffee, leafy hops, caramel and subtle smoke. Medium bodied. MaltDawg (778), Richmond, Virginia, USA Oct 6, 2008 Tap at brewery. 5.4% ABV. Slight smoke and grain in aroma. Very clear amber brown with no head. Caramel and touch of roast in flavor and distinct hint of peat smoke. Light body with medium mouthfeel. Finish is lightly malty with low hop flavor and bitterness. Very nice beer that required a second pint for proper evaluation. badlizard (2325), Berkeley, California, USA Sep 7, 2008 On tap at brewery. Light copper brown with a fizzy white head. Caramel and smoke aroma. Caramel, grain, some whiskey like character, and smoke with a sticky dry finish. waveman352 (178), Walden, New York, USA Nov 6, 2007 4 oz sample @ Cally’s. Dark reddish amber pour with a very sweet malty nose. Pretty thin mouth feel. Very malty, not all that hoppy. A pretty solid brew. They apparently won a medal for this beer. Very good lacing. dmtroyer (409), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 19, 2007 Draft from Cally’s. Mostly malt aroma, this one poured dark amber with a smallish, disappearing head. Lots of sweet malt, not much else... a fleeting bitter hop on the palate. This Cally’s brew has the most press and they always have it on tap but it isn’t my favorite. tronraner (1906), Maryville, Tennessee, USA Oct 1, 2007 Draught at the brewpub. Pours hazy dark amber with small ivory head. The aroma is ashy and sweet, with some caramel, burnt toast, some grass, and light alcohol. The flavor has an interesting smoky kick at first, then some burning leaves. Some grass tones and a bit of dark caramel follow, then a chalky finish with just a little bit of a vegetal hint.
