Smells lightly smokey in the aroma, more of an ash/tobacco note, quite faint. A hint of nutty malt and some bitter notes. Flavor is dry, lightly roasty and a touch bitter, with some creamy, milk-like sweetness. Like the other 2 beers I tried from Calhouns, it was horribly thin and watery. jasonp (1514), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA

Taste has very slight notes of caramel, smoke, pipe tobacco. Moderately sweet, too weak and very watery on the palate. Needs more body. hopscotch (5549), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Nov 22, 2004 Crystal clear, dark amber ale with a small, khaki head. Nice lacework. Light caramel and smoke in the nose with earthy notes as well. The flavor is thin, but well-balanced with very subtle hints of caramel and oak. Light-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation. Short, dry finish. Thanks to Scott Jackson for hauling the growler up to the DC/MD/VA/WV gathering at Founders in Alexandria, VA. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 17, 2004 Congrats to Calhoun’s for landing the gold at the GABF for this one! Dark amber, nice head. Slight caramel aroma. Pleasant mouthfeel, mostly gentle caramel notes. Just enough hop bitterness to keep it dry. Medium bodied. I’ve honestly never been able to pick out a smoked note in this beer, but it is always a highly quaffable, enjoyable pint. Thanks to Rob for hauling down the growler! jeffc666 (1896), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 10, 2004 Clear dark amber with a dense tan head. Ever so light peat inthe aroma, but mainly sweet caramel. The flavor is more peaty and smoky than the aroma leads you to believe. A drinkable beer with a medium body and dry finish. dberger624 (1028), Phila, Pennsylvania, USA

Had a good smoked flavor that lasted through the hole beer. wolfman913 (5), Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, USA does not count | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Feb 16, 2004 Not my favorite Scottish, but after a couple sips, hard to order anything else. Certainly a good representative of the style. MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 13, 2002 Not smoky at all, but still a darn respectable Scottish ale. Palate’s a bit thin, but not depressingly so, as in this brew’s case it becomes a bit more quaffable than normal for the style. Very woody, peaty flavor. Finish is reminiscent of oak wood chips, and a bit nutty.
