| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 3, 2003 Sweet, malty, doughy aroma, with definite brown sugar and caramel, along with some breadiness and cocoa. Deep brown in color with a small but creamy head. Flavor is very sweet, malty and faintly spicy, with some nut, coffee, caramel and yeast. Exceedingly smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Slightly chocolatey aftertaste. Seemingly unique. How funny the "controversy" that has surrounded this particular beer for so long here. hoppygrrrl (104), Albion, Michigan, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 3, 2003 Dark brown with ruby glints visible in the glass. Wonderful, mild aroma of molasses, caramel, a bit nutty. Nice, thin palate, but the taste fell short of the scent. Seemed a bit flat. argo0 (7027), Washington DC, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 2, 2003 Cola body with small beige head. Aroma is big malty, toffee/caramel, fairly sweet. Taste is malty, toffee, roasty, caramel. Finishes roasty sweet, no bitterness. Not very complex, but still a very tasty treat. joeycapps (1466), Waterdown, Ontario, Canada
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 2, 2003 Dark Brown w/ beige head & good carbonation. Aroma of caramel, nuts, light coffee, & peat. Thinnish body. Flavour of caramel, nuts, light coffee, & peat as well. Really don't understand why this beer is so highly rated. JoeM500 (1876), Chicago (little italy), Illinois, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 2, 2003 Dark brown, chocolate and biscuits. Almost stoutlike in body and taste, even some dry bitterness mixed in with the chocolatey sweet finish. Not a whole lot going on, but an aggressive lager. Aftertaste of chocolate covered almonds. Decent, but not sure how this was a top 50 beer for so long. Maybe I'll head up to the brewery this Fall and try it there. hopscotch (5549), Vero Beach, Florida, USA

It used to be a fixture in the top ten. Very dark with a clear, ruby hue when held up to light. Creamy, lightly-tanned head.
The aroma does not smell like a dunkel. Buttery and chocolatey and very imperial stout-like. The flavor is well-balanced and chocolatey... milk chocolate and buttermilk. Full-bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Short, semi-dry, chocolatey finish. Very nice, almost-world-class brew! Radek Kliber (4000), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada

Dark brown in color. Light coffee/smoky notes. Finishes thin and watery. Very disappointing considering the hype.
