Commercial Description:
Summer Barleywine
Named for the 15th Century firearm which was successor to the Blunderbuss, this barrel-aged barleywine aspires to change the way you think of strong beer. Intended for sipping on these sultry summer evenings on our patio (or inside, with the AC), it is at once light and drinkable yet boasts significant body, and is almost syrupy smooth in texture without being cloying. Arquebus presents beautiful, complex notes of concentrated peach and apricot fruit, wildflower honey, toast and coconut oakiness, and a soft, tannin-hinted, white wine-like finish. Aged in French oak chardonnay barrels acquired from the Silverado winery in Napa, the residual flavors contributed by the wood offer a mellowness of character not provided by stainless steel fermentation. This honey-hued, ambrosial beer, beheld in a simple stemmed glass, pours with just a mild effervescence which accentuates its myriad nuances of flavors and aromas. Several more barrels of this elixir await release in the coming years. So for now, enjoy!

Pours a cloudy golden color with no head. Aroma of raisins and some sweetness. The flavor has a dominant of wood barrel with some raisin, sweetness and alcohol. The body is light with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation. The wood flavor is too omnipresent to be really interesting.

A lightly hazed dark amber ale with no head. In mouth, a superb aroma of treacle, musty malt, vinous notes and vanilla. In mouth, a well blended mix of sweet candy malt, cinnamon hearts, wooden notes, and grapefruit bitterness. Light yet enticing barley wine. Served on cask. On tap at brewpub Oct. 11 2008.

One of my favorites at the 2009 Boulder Strong Ale Festival. This one wasn’t as burly and bold as most beers at the fest, but it was very pleasant, with a mellower complexity. I’m glad it was my first sample. Rust colored and slightly cloudy. Tingly, refreshing texture. Hard cider notes were complemented by a nice and vinous, white wine characteristic. Other notes of oak, pear and apple. Warming in the throat, though alcohol was hidden well. Great stuff.

Little to no head, appears to be massively undercarbonated or flat, but shows up firm enough on the tongue, there’s still some body present. Cloudy apple juice appearance, traces of dirty particulates floating around in the glass. Spirtzy apple cider and champagne character, slightly boozy, overall little too sweet and juice like but interesting.

Tap at EBF. Seemed a bit cleaner and more refined last Sept at the brewpub though. Pours a deep hazy orangey amber with a nice thin lasting head. Aroma is strange but good- lots of white wine grapes, spicy earthy gewurtz and almost a prickly mineral like light fruitiness - pear and peach chard or viognier with a good syrupy malty sweet backbone. Flavor is also a nice malty toasty sweetness backed up with lots of grapey tannins, some oak, earth, and a spicy herbal wine-like kick. Smooth and moderately sweet throughout- nice BW>

Draft at EBF. Pours a honey amber beer with a thin lacing. Salty malt bill hints of oak and wine. Mild tannins, sweet and tart with some grape and peach. What a weird offering, thanks BrianK for making me try this one.

Wow, wow, wow. What sick depth this beer has. Smells mead like with nice honeycomb coming to mind. Taste is incredibly smooth and light bodied. Multi-layered mid pallette involving wine grapes, honey, and mild chard. barrel is exquisite. Nothing is over the top here. Everything is mellow and dances over your tongue revealing all the great depth this beer has to offer. Well done and very original concept.
