Commercial Description:
A blueberry lambic brewed with Danish blueberries exclusively for Ølbutikken, Copenhagen, Denmark.

There are four different vintages available that, because of the length of time the berries soaked in the beer, have turned out rather differently:

Batch 1: 2005: The berries soaked in the beer too long leaving an almost vinegarish lambic with the well-known Cantillon tartness. The color is hazy orange. Will be sold in extremely limited quantity.

Batch 2 & 3: 2007: A more fruity and not as tart lambic as the 2005 vintage. Beautiful deep red colored.

Batch 4: 2009: Maybe the most fruity batch so far with an extremely well balance between the fruit and the funk!

Batch 5: 2009: Extremely soft mouthfeel with a distinct tartness.

Thanks a bunch to FogDog and JDub for hooking me up with a taste. This beer rocks. Pours the color of a berry medley stuck in a blender. Kind of a purple, blue and red color. Nice. Aroma is strong sour funk and strong berries. Full of flavor and aroma with a tart berry flavor. Delicious.

2009 bottle, thanks to KimJohansen for trading me one of these from Denmark. Wish I knew this thing was going to explode all over my kitchen counter, losing the first half-glass. Appearance is deep ruby red, cloudy, with a fine pink bubbly head. Some dark sediment settles to the bottom. I got excited, waiting for a wonderful plethora of fruity blueberry and serious barnyard funk, yet was let down at first quaff. Just a bit less complex and robust than I thought. Nose starts with funky cheese, light horseblanket / must, and biscuit. Where’s the blueberry? Flavor finally delivers blueberry, some cherry and a light citric character. Very balanced with smooth transitions, but overall seems to lack depth. Palate is smooth, finishing mildly tart with spritzy carbonation. Overall, a great beer that is balanced and highly drinkable, but I was expecting much more from both the blueberry and the funk. Not much of a desire to go after it again.

2009 vinage shared by Justin at the 6/27 Del Mar Doom. Hmmmm, well, to start ... this thing blew up after opening. Gusher x 10. A gorgeous looking beer (I see this word a lot in its reviews, but it’s the most fitting) ... but the flavor is not nearly what I was expecting. I couldn’t pick out too much blueberry (very faint), nor much funk to speak of. This actually fairly easy to drink w/ a quickly fading sour finish. Wasn’t stomach churning by any means. Are the ratings rarity driven? Is the ’09 batch not up to par? Granted, by rating will just about match the avg, but I guess I was expecting more? Officially a let down and not worth the hassle of obtaining. Thanks bro!

Bottle of batch 4. Absolutely gorgeous, deep purple beer with a thick sticky deep pink head. The aroma is just lovely. Soft funky acidity. Lactic with a prominent bretty funk. Less of the Cantillon house character than I would have imagined. Very fruity with a mix of blueberries and blackberries coming to the front. The palate is very soft with a light chewy acidic funkiness. Lightly earthy and spicy. The palate is soft and silky with a lingering fruitiness.

Bottle Vintage 2009. Hazy very deep red colour with a pink head. Aroma: sour & tart with blueberries and cheese in the background. Flavor: sour & acidic (but not very sour for a Cantillon beer), lemon, blueberry soup, light funk, light wood. Dry finish. Very refreshing. I could drink a lot of this.
