Commercial Description:
The Lou Pepe Gueuze is a blend of three different 2-year-old lambics. The standard Cantillon Gueuze is a blend of 1,2, and 3-year-olds. The inclusion of the younger lambic (which still has some unfermented sugars in it) sparks a refermentation in the bottle that gives Gueuze its famous champagne-like spritziness. The simple idea behind the special Lou Pepe blend is that it should have much more of the taste of old lambic, which is of course much harder, drier, more sour, and more complex than the young stuff. (Though 3-year-olds are generally more complex than 2-year-olds, it's not necessarily so; the 2-year-olds used in this instance have as much character as most 3-year-olds.) This being Gueuze, it has to be spritzy, so the brewery opted for the same method used in conditioning champagne: everyday refined sugar is dissolved in water and added to cause a refermentation. The sugar ferments out completely, so there is no residual sweetness, which Jean-Pierre famously detests.

750ml 2000 vintage, thanks to jrob_21 for this. aged 7 years....pours hazy orange-golden with white head that lasted the whole bottle. great look. nose is very funky with nice bretty funk, barnyard notes with citrus, pear, white grapes, dry white wine, musty, and slightly vinegary. flavor is only softly acidic and with age its rounded out nicely. flavor notes of musty, brett, oak, slight vinegar, pear, slight tangerine, and white grapes. mouthfeel is fizzy but finishes smooth. carbination is lively. palate isn’t as long as it could be. almost everything seems so polished, perfected, and so drinkable. i think i could drink this constantly, a great gueuze that shows it has aged nicely with rounded out acidity.

2000. Not sure what to expect from something this old. Pours golden with a crisp, sparkling head. Smells of funky socks. Sharp mustard taste and something that’s striving to taste like an orange. Wears it’s age well. A real treat! Thanks SoLan!!

Courtesy SoLan. My third beer sampled at O-Town Throwdown. 2000 on neck label. Cloudy straw color with thin light white head. Aroma has a pleasant funk to it. Sharp acidic tones are absent, and a layered musk and dust combination play around with a hint of a raw, sweet smell. Light and airy on the palate. Smooth on the taste. No aggressive tartness; earthy, grassy, slightly peppery notes. The tartness that is there lingers pleasantly on the palate, providing extra sensory stimuli as you return to contemplate the aroma some more. A great beer. Thanks, Alan.

2000 bottle. Courtesy SoLan. Pours a crisp, clear gold, with a very thin hazy white head, typical of gueze’s. Smells of monster acidity and tannins like all Cantillon’s do. The taste is still very sharp and crisp for 7 years old. This one has aged gracefully. The sourness seemed as though it had mellowed out slightly over time, which I thought was splendid because it wasn’t overpowering. This one was tasty.
