Commercial Description:
The Lou Pepe Gueuze is a blend of three different 2-year-old lambics. The standard Cantillon Gueuze is a blend of 1,2, and 3-year-olds. The inclusion of the younger lambic (which still has some unfermented sugars in it) sparks a refermentation in the bottle that gives Gueuze its famous champagne-like spritziness. The simple idea behind the special Lou Pepe blend is that it should have much more of the taste of old lambic, which is of course much harder, drier, more sour, and more complex than the young stuff. (Though 3-year-olds are generally more complex than 2-year-olds, it's not necessarily so; the 2-year-olds used in this instance have as much character as most 3-year-olds.) This being Gueuze, it has to be spritzy, so the brewery opted for the same method used in conditioning champagne: everyday refined sugar is dissolved in water and added to cause a refermentation. The sugar ferments out completely, so there is no residual sweetness, which Jean-Pierre famously detests.

A 2001 vintage that I bought at Cantillon in 2004 and brought back with me. Uncorked at a wonderful Belgian-themed dinner hosted by maltydogs. Nice big brett in the nose, big lactic and horseblanket, dusty. That nice Cantillon funk, but smoother than their others. Clear golden amber liquid with thin foamy lacing head atop. Light bodied, with very mild carbonation, almost still. Taste was amazing. Smooth, with lactic and Brett notes, sharp acidity but not stomach-wrenching. Clean crisp after with nice bitterness. Wheat and horseblanket, with a surprisingly mild finish. Very nice gueuze.

Holiday Wine, Escondido 8/06. Hazy copper orange with small white head. Sour musty aroma. Nicely balanced and less acidic as some of the other cantillions.

2002 Vintage thanks to me (bought in NYC; New Beer; April 2004). Gold, slightly hazed body. Bubbly off-white head. Loud aroma of lemons, barnyard funk, odd mineral character like sulfur or something. Very full, complex, and yummy smelling. Flavor isn’t as puckering as I expected. Dry, but not too dry. Sour cheese, minerally hops, it has a stale type of cobwebby mold thing going on too.

2002 vintage thanks to Jason. Pour is a light orangish amber color w/ a small soapy off white head. Heavily funk-a-fied aroma leathers hay some wet musty oak boards some light sour cherries or other berry (i’m not quite sure). Palate is well coated and very tart. Flavor is tart fruits hints of some candied sugars i think the fruits are cherries a little bit anyway and some citrus almost orange like notes. Quite sour defiante dry wood notes in the finish. Nice.

2002 bottle. hazy yellowish orange with a billowing white head. fades a bit but retains a nice lacing. aroma is very woody, musty, and dry. Light to medium bodied with a silky mouthfeel. Much more dry and woody flavors than your typical Cantillon. Notes of oak, horseblanket, citric acid, pepper, and spontaneous yeast. Still a great beer, but this kind of let me down.

2003 bottle, I bought this after notalush and apoptosis got it, just cause I wanted something sour and why not this. Poured with a small head that quickly dissipates. Color is dark yellow falling into an orange area with some golden tints. Aroma is signature Cantillon with the acidic tartness with lemon and other fruit resemblances. The mouthfeel is a bit heavier and less carbonated than usual Cantillon. Taste is a little disappointing, has some woodsy characters to it. Still finishes with a nice mouth puckering sourness. Also, nice but the Kriek is just great.

2003. Light gold with a loose, thin head. Sour "Belgian" fermentation aromas with lemon, earth, and some complex aspects from aging. Definitely light-bodied with strong tartness that still manages to be quite lithe. Simple yet multi-dimensional flavors make this out to be quite an interesting lambic experience.
