Commercial Description:
The Lou Pepe Gueuze is a blend of three different 2-year-old lambics. The standard Cantillon Gueuze is a blend of 1,2, and 3-year-olds. The inclusion of the younger lambic (which still has some unfermented sugars in it) sparks a refermentation in the bottle that gives Gueuze its famous champagne-like spritziness. The simple idea behind the special Lou Pepe blend is that it should have much more of the taste of old lambic, which is of course much harder, drier, more sour, and more complex than the young stuff. (Though 3-year-olds are generally more complex than 2-year-olds, it's not necessarily so; the 2-year-olds used in this instance have as much character as most 3-year-olds.) This being Gueuze, it has to be spritzy, so the brewery opted for the same method used in conditioning champagne: everyday refined sugar is dissolved in water and added to cause a refermentation. The sugar ferments out completely, so there is no residual sweetness, which Jean-Pierre famously detests.

Bottle says 2000 - Cork says 2002. Pours bright gold into a tumbler. Fluffy bright white micro head slowly recedes and leaves clumpy lacing. Crisp, sour barnyard funk. Sharp cheese with lasting sour yogurt finish.

Bottled at Horsens Beerfestival. Clear, golden with almost no head. Mould, barnyard and citrus in the aroma. The flavor has mould, sourness, yeast and unripe-green apples. Thin body and astringent. Quite nice. (061028)

2002 bottle. Beer 33. Horse blanket, yay! Not as funky in the flavor, but still quite complex and crazy. A very nice gueuze.

Yellow colour with no head. Low carbonated. Aroma of lemons and other fruits. Sourness is limited giving it a fresh feel.

Bottle (2003) : Cork states 2005. Aroma has sour apple, lots of woodiness, a hint of yeastiness, and light barnyard. The nose is not as sour and funky as I would expect from Cantillon. Pours a mostly transparent golden-orange with a touch of haze and a fizzy white head that quickly fades to a tiny ring around the edges of the glass. Sourness and funk is very weak for a Cantillon. Light lemon and sour apple, but there’s a slight touch of sweet apple too, almost like a cider. Finishes with a moderate amount of woodiness and light funkiness. Mouthfeel is not spritzy like I would expect and is actually sort of flat. I absolutely loved the Kriek, but I have to say this is quite a let down. I’d like to try this again, but Cantillon has so many other offerings that I’d prefer to spend my money on before I gave this another shot.

Bottle 2003. Poured cloudy orange color with a large fizzy head that was lasting with good lacing. Moderate sour yeasty aroma. Medium body with a dry texture. Medium sour citrus flavor with a medium sour finish of moderated duration. This is a standout beer.
