Commercial Description:
The Lou Pepe Gueuze is a blend of three different 2-year-old lambics. The standard Cantillon Gueuze is a blend of 1,2, and 3-year-olds. The inclusion of the younger lambic (which still has some unfermented sugars in it) sparks a refermentation in the bottle that gives Gueuze its famous champagne-like spritziness. The simple idea behind the special Lou Pepe blend is that it should have much more of the taste of old lambic, which is of course much harder, drier, more sour, and more complex than the young stuff. (Though 3-year-olds are generally more complex than 2-year-olds, it's not necessarily so; the 2-year-olds used in this instance have as much character as most 3-year-olds.) This being Gueuze, it has to be spritzy, so the brewery opted for the same method used in conditioning champagne: everyday refined sugar is dissolved in water and added to cause a refermentation. The sugar ferments out completely, so there is no residual sweetness, which Jean-Pierre famously detests.

Vintage 2000: This kind of funkiness, I like much more in a gueuze than in a fruited blend. Hazy yellow, it smells of slow drying hay, leather, dust, and an overriding sourness. The taste is quite tart, citric in nature, with a touch of grainy sweetness in the finish. Not bad.

1999 vintage. foamy white head, clear golden color. aroma is barnyard, fresh cut grass. already I know we’re starting a wild trip to the backcountry outside Brussels. flavor is sour & tart but smooth. nice lively carbonation. clean finish. surprisingly, a little grapefruit too. very happy to share this at JimMack’s!

1999 750ml. bottle thanks to Mullman. Golden/orange color with a small white head. Tart aroma of freshly cut grass, lemon and dirt. Flavor was pretty much the same as the aroma. Very earthy, tart and dry. Excellent.

thanks to mullman for providing this at the jimmack invt...a clear golden color with a tight foamy yellow head. aroma is a sour grassy/earthy scent. flavor is light and grassy, with a strong tartness and a bit of fruit sweetness. the tail on this beer actually made my mouth pucker from the bitterness. this gathering was my first venture into the lambic genre, and i have to say, i just dont think they are my bag, baby.

Thanks to Mullman for this one at a great gathering at jimmack04’s. Alright this is a Lambic-Gueuze I like. Light and tart flavors. Finishes crisp, clean, and dry.

05.22.05 1999 750 thanks to Mullman at jimmack04 invitational. I’m always tentative and anxious going into a lambic tasting because as much as I want to love them I really have to work at it. Light grass, mold, earth aromas. Some honey. Soft and grassy and dry in a way not unlike a saison, quite effy despite its age. This lambic is more mild and pleasant than most other Cantillons I’ve had. It’s less sour and much more drinkable than I expected. Thanks MullDude!

Pours a hazy light orange color with a very thin white head. Very good aroma of earthy yeast with fruits and some acidity. Very good flavor of earthy yeast with strong acidity and fruits. The body is light with a dusty and dry mouthfeel, the carbonation is soft. Very good but I feel that Cantillon’s regular gueuze is better.
