Commercial Description:
The Lou Pepe Gueuze is a blend of three different 2-year-old lambics. The standard Cantillon Gueuze is a blend of 1,2, and 3-year-olds. The inclusion of the younger lambic (which still has some unfermented sugars in it) sparks a refermentation in the bottle that gives Gueuze its famous champagne-like spritziness. The simple idea behind the special Lou Pepe blend is that it should have much more of the taste of old lambic, which is of course much harder, drier, more sour, and more complex than the young stuff. (Though 3-year-olds are generally more complex than 2-year-olds, it's not necessarily so; the 2-year-olds used in this instance have as much character as most 3-year-olds.) This being Gueuze, it has to be spritzy, so the brewery opted for the same method used in conditioning champagne: everyday refined sugar is dissolved in water and added to cause a refermentation. The sugar ferments out completely, so there is no residual sweetness, which Jean-Pierre famously detests.

2001 bottle. Cloudy orange & straw with a small head. Funky, lemony Cantillon aroma. Although the mouthfeel is lively, but you cannot tell by the appearance, as the head dissapeared leaving just a pool of cloudy liquid love. Tastes as though fresh, ripe grapes were dragged through the pasture on the way into the barn to ferment. Pucking tartness soon becomes mellow dryness in the palate. Not my favorite Cantillon but an excellent gueuze.

Bottle. 200 vintage. Shared with Maibockaddict. Golden and clear in color with a nice thick white head. Slightly sweet aroma. Well balanced and not overpowering. Not to tart. Really nice. Sweet and sour flavor. Nice and refreshing flavor. Smooth palate. Wow. Really nice.

2000 vintage, 2002 bottling. Golden, clear, thick tan white head. Aroma is slightly soured, slightly sweet, and slightly barnyard. Definitely well balanced and not overpowering. Sweet and sour refreshing flavor with a hint of cheese. Very smooth palate. I don’t know how this is effected by age, but WOW, this may be the best bottle of Gueuze that I have had yet...

Bottle label 2000. $17. Sour, rancid, cheese or milk gone bad. What? Either something was wrong with this particular bottle or THIS is the beer that deserves the Arrogant Bastard label narrative. If the latter than I am probably not worthy and certainly not interested.

Holy Geueze, Batman! this is so well made it is like liquid crystal. Amazing Cantillon base that takes ip up a notch or two over lesser examples of the style. More complex and dry acidity with a huge citrus tart balance. Great nose, body and finish just awesome. Depth, complexity and balance that defy description.

Bottle labled 2000. Hazy amber color with large white head, with some hanging around lacing the glass. Standard gueuze aroma, less funk than others, very citric, moderate pinapple, rotting wood. Refined body, woody, sour but not overpowering, juicy, firm, dry finish. A beautiful beer. (Bottle purchased at Downtown Liquors).

Cloudy orange/gold with a white head that settles quickly. Aromas are sour and musty with hints of apple and that special Cantillon barnyardiness. Flavours are initially quite soft and fruity, rising to the expected musty farmyard and sour notes. Has a nice sparkle on the palate and a good level of dryness on the finish . The best gueuze I have had.

cloudy soft consistent orange color, small head with lots of bubles. Hightly acidic smelling, light ash, pine, apples, lots of peach in the aroma. Big lambic hit of sourness early, very sharp, rounded, peaches and apples, a very soft finish that makes me overlook how sour it is (as the Giradin afterwards did as well) Lasting tartness i can’t shake
