Commercial Description:
The Lou Pepe Gueuze is a blend of three different 2-year-old lambics. The standard Cantillon Gueuze is a blend of 1,2, and 3-year-olds. The inclusion of the younger lambic (which still has some unfermented sugars in it) sparks a refermentation in the bottle that gives Gueuze its famous champagne-like spritziness. The simple idea behind the special Lou Pepe blend is that it should have much more of the taste of old lambic, which is of course much harder, drier, more sour, and more complex than the young stuff. (Though 3-year-olds are generally more complex than 2-year-olds, it's not necessarily so; the 2-year-olds used in this instance have as much character as most 3-year-olds.) This being Gueuze, it has to be spritzy, so the brewery opted for the same method used in conditioning champagne: everyday refined sugar is dissolved in water and added to cause a refermentation. The sugar ferments out completely, so there is no residual sweetness, which Jean-Pierre famously detests.

Brewed in 2001, bottled in 2003 (as stated on cork). This was my Christmas present from my in-laws, who bought it a year ago and stored it in their refrigerator--thank you Gerry and Tim! Happy Christmas! I started drinking this before the appetizers of Christmas dinner and finished after dessert. It may have been that since I had had a lot to eat during the day by the time I cracked open the bottle (about 3 p.m.) my palate was already well acclimatized, but whatever the reason, I was surprised not to have been hit by any kind of sourness. (Although, I have also developed some resistance to gueuze sourness.) The dominant aromas here seemed to me more fruity than barnyard--honey, pear, apple cider--though certainly there was woodiness and some musty aromas. Lightly spritzy, on a dark yellow body. The flavor was more of the same, very dry with some apple and funkiness. My brother-in-law and wife both tried a bit and loved it, which means it isn’t aggressive enough! Acidity built in my gut through the end of the bottle, but of course, I was also eating a ton of food at Christmas dinner so it is hard to isolate the real cause. Excellent, top-of-the-line gueuze though probably not a gueuze I will return to again and again when I want a hit of gueuze funk and sour.

Pours a golden color with a bubbly head. aroma is gueuze, barnyard, etc. Not super heavy aroma, a nice and delicate dankness. Flavor is delicate and drinkable. Dry palate. I like this but maybe not as much as others but still very good.

Brewed in 2001 Botteld in 2003 750 ml bottleClear golden with a dense white head that dissapates rather quickly. The aroma says gueuze though it does not scream this. Light barnyard, cobwebs, musty basement, and some sourness. The flavor is fairly mellow, comparded to some other guezes. Zero sweetness, very crisp and refreshing. Damn fine. The most delicate gueze I have ever tasted. It in no way assaults you but is very drinkable. Yum.

Rating 850! 750ml bottle from Beers of Europe I allowed the bottle to settle at room temperature for a few weeks prior to a half hour of chilling, served into a Cantillon Gueuze glass. Smells wonderfully sour, with light alcohol aroma, light woodyness, loads of fruit and meatyness. This is incredibly dry, with typical Cantillon mouth ripping sourness, but surprisingly soft acidity. Citrus fruit notes complete this wonderfully mature traditional gueuze.

Nice orange and amber hue, very nice. Aroma is lemon, grapefruit, sugar, and cookies. Taste is very nice and tart, georgous. Grapefruit, salt, orange citrus. I was told that this would be somewhat palate ripping, and it is. Very nice and pleasant, not over the top, just an extrodinary beer.
