IPFreely (1470), Niagara Falls, New York, USA Dec 9, 2003 Updated: Apr 5, 2005 Red grape color, not much head. Big sour fruit aroma, grapes and rasberries. Sour and tart, a little winey with a very dry finish. Very nice. Thanks Josh. Update: larger sample gave way to some woody notes and the acidity is just fookin wonderful. Sour grape and cherry. Outstanding.
dchmela (817), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 27, 2008 Tasting at Backus’ Backyard Bash. Thanks to the Cheeseman for the taste. Pours a bright strawberry red. Sour barnyard funk aroma, very pungent. Sour puckery taste with hints of tart apple and vinegar. Very dry sour aftertaste. Not a fan of this style, but this is well done. 0110x011 (18), Dana Point, California, USA Oct 25, 2008 Pours a cloudy garnet with a thin, wispy head that disappears in seconds. Cherries, grapes, oak, red wine, and vinegar on the nose. Sour grapes & cherries hit first, with oakiness and sweet fruit flavors following. Very rich & complex. Tart for sure, but not overpowering, with the sweeter side providing a nice balance. Finishes crisp & dry.
This is the kind of sour that American brewers are trying to emulate. Easily up there with the best. DragonStout (1223), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 23, 2008 Sampled @ Backus’s Backdoor Bash.Courtesy of the Cheeseman, Poured a beautiful pink grapefruit color with no head. The nose was full of funk.Flavor was sour but not overdone.Lots of vinous grapes here. This was pretty good considering i am not a big fan of sours. GodOfThunder (118), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 23, 2008 I enjoyed this one with Beerlando and the pear and apple stilton. Thanks to TheCheeseman for hooking us up with both. It was amazing and my favorite experience of the BBBash. It poured like a slightly milky, watered down pinot noir with no head but just a little white lacing. Tastes like tart cranberries, wild yeast and a fine red wine. Perfect balance between the tart, sweet and bold wine elements. A great beer, especially paired with the sweet and creamy stilton. Beerlando (1439), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 22, 2008 2008 vintage, courtesy TheCheeseMan. Wow! This one is killer! The color is so absolutely beautiful, like the flesh of a glistening, freshly sliced, ruby-red grapefruit. The cloudy body is capped with a wispy white film. Minimal, spotty lacing slowly rejoins the body. The nose is mildly funky by Cantillon standards, fleshy Merlot and Cab Franc grapes taking top billing over tart red berries and dusty, barnyard yeast. The flavor is supremely blended, no on element overpowering the next. Luscious, lightly tannic red grapes show alongside old, saturated oak, tart berry, acidic lemon, and moderate barnyard yeast funk. The mouthfeel is light and effervescent, sufficient tartness imparting a quenching sensation, with sufficient berry sweetness lending easy palatability. This is just a damn fantastic beer. Bravo Cantillon! I might also point out that this beer paired like a dream with creamy Stilton with dried pears and apples, also provided by TheCheeseMan. I need more of both, ASAP!
