BeerBelcher (694), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Mar 20, 2008 I’ve had a few Capital beers over the last few days, before which I’ve had little exposure to this brewery. All (Blonde Doppelbock, Munich Dark, Baltic Porter) have struck me as lacking the flavor intensity of competitive beers of the same styles. These beers aren’t bad, just muted, and that is the impression that this beer gave me as well.
This beer poured dark with a nice tan head from the beer engine. Aroma was fainter than I expected, but with some nice roastiness and hints of toffee/caramel. Flavor was again a bit fainter than I expeted, but had some good dark roast to it, but I didn’t detect much else there. Hand-pump imparted a great smooth mouthfeel.
I’d have this beer again, but I can’t say that when it comes to Baltic Porters or Imperial Stouts this one is tops on either list.
I had this off the hand-pump at Roman’s Pub (Milwaukee).
crowderm (151), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Jun 28, 2008 Pours a slightly unattractive dark brown with no head. Sweet caramel flavor, a bit woody, dark fruit, hints of milk chocolate. Very sweet and soft - very easy drinking given the 8.5%. Pretty tasty brew. IPAaLLtHEwAY (82), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA Jun 21, 2008 Pours a dark brown. Smells like caramel malt. Flavor is sweet and caramel like also fruity. cblado (66), Wisconsin, USA Jun 17, 2008 12 oz bottle. Poured a translucent mahogany color, a bit of a beige head on it. Aroma was a caramel malt. Flavor was very odd, it was definitely malty but lacked a bitter, hoppy, porter flavor. The incredibly thin, fizzy palate didn’t help either. This beer looks like a porter and acts like a lager... very confusing. It wasn’t terrible but I don’t intend on trying it again. CaptainCougar (4596), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jun 16, 2008 Pours a transparent deep dark amber mahogany with a frothy, stringy-lacing beige head. Aroma of rich, sweet dark caramel malt and an authentic lager yeast profile with a touch of molasses and smoke. Body starts fairly full and sweet with some earthy dark caramel flavors, a touch of dark fruits, noble bittering hops and a drier semi-sweet finish. A pretty smooth Baltic porter, but it could use a little more dark malt character and color. Petrucci914 (306), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jun 7, 2008 Pours a crisp clear brown color with a medium off-white head that fades to nothing. Aroma is sweet caramel malts and that’s about it. Taste is about the same. Ummm.......baltic porter? I don’t think so. This tastes like an Altbier.
