TheEnemy (422), Chicago, USA Nov 3, 2005 12oz bottle Not sure what a "blonde doppelbock" is, but what we have here is a clear amber beer with a thin white head that fairly quickly recedes to the rim. Aroma of sweet malt, alcohol, and some fruit. Flavor of light caramel, deeply sweet malt, some alcohol, and a slight hint of dry-toasted grain. Medium-full body, slightly thick palate. More of a "doppelmarzen" than a doppelbock; loses a few overall points for not being to doppelbock style in color and flavor. But make no mistake, this is a rich, enjoyable beer. Grab a sixer of this limited release whenever you can -- definitely worth your while. MIBRomeo (1962), Wisconsin, USA Oct 10, 2005 pours an orange color w/ a nice creamy well laced white head. Smells warm and sweet... lots of malt carmel and plum hints of alcohol. Medium body good creaminess. Flavor is sweet malt touches of carmel and honey hints of bread and a spicy yeasty finish w/ a warm swallow. Good stuff. Illini08 (528), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Oct 6, 2005 Pours a hazy rust color with just a little head that leaves some lacing. Smell is sweet and malty with some spiciness as well. Taste is sweet with a nice touch of bitterness in the finish. This is my first doppelbock and I think I got a good one to start out on. I will drink this again. sloth (1658), Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA Sep 17, 2005 Small white head that,s short lived. Clear copper colored brew. Light malty nose, light graininess. Body is medium with a light carbonation. Medium sweet malt flavors, lightly bready, Faint notes of honey and a touch of caramel. Mildly sweet finish. Alcohol is well hidden. IMtheOptimator (1161), Bethel, Connecticut, USA Aug 25, 2005 Thanks to my Secret Santa for this beer.
Poured an effervescent golden with a semi-creamy off-white head that stayed on the beer. Light aroma of grapes, syrup, and a touch of grassy hops, not unlike other paler lagers. Taste is rather sweet and rich. Grapes and honey dominate. Very little hop presence and a semi-sweet finish, less dry than the dark it seems, and perhaps a tad more drinkable. Alcohol well hidden. Rich yet refreshing. Saarlander (1577), Saarlouis, Germany Aug 14, 2005 Some mentioned a hoppiness to this beer, my bottle has almost no hop character, its quite malty, sweet, which usually I stay away from, but it works good for this beer. Alcohol is well hidden, long sweet aftertaste. I’d have it again. Thanks to Duane for this bottle! Philip (436), Illinois, USA Aug 8, 2005 Updated: Aug 12, 2005Bottle 2004, aged one year in the cellar. I’m surprised to see this beer in the low 80s, given its fulfilling flavors and complexity. The connection between beer and Scotch is particularly evident in this brew. Carmel and toffee notes blend finely with vanilla and hazelnut, while the 8.0 ABV imparts warmth to the finish. Of the Doppelbock series, this one is my personal favorite. My recommendation to the brewer over email is to consider ageing this Doppelbock in a Scotch barrel, which I imagine would put this on the Top50 list in no time.
(An additional bottle on 8/12, and moved the rating from 4.1 to 4.0) 1FastSTi (2551), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA Aug 7, 2005 Pours to a hazy copper colored body with a thin oily looking white head. I sampled this in a snifter to get full aroma effect. This beer is decently strong. There are sweet malts, grassy hops, spicy hops. The flavor is where this beer excels. Caramel, pine hops, lots of pepper. The palate is a little light. Overall, this is a good beer but I want more aroma and palate.
