| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 9, 2003 A very good brown. Deep amber in color with a big head. Great malt aroma with a hint of nut/caramel. Big roasted malt/ toffee taste. Finish is like butter. Nice aftertaste that will keep your lips smacking long after your last sip. | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jan 27, 2003 Malty, bready, nutty aroma with just a hint of sweetness. Lighter brown in color, clear, with a fair head for the style. Flavor is grainy and malty, with some light caramel and breadiness. Finish starts to show some light bitterness but then the malt takes over again and sweetens a bit into the malty aftertaste. Light to medium body, palate is a bit on the thin side. An easy quaffing ale. Frank (1066), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 23, 2003 Quikly thinning head. Clear brown appearance. Slighly brown-sugar and malt aroma along with a little nuttiness. Low hop bitterness. The first thing I notice as I taste this is rich coffee flavor that wanes as the beer warms, giving way to a creamy caramelly finish. I'm surprised at how good this is given that capital specializes in German-style lagers and pilsners. GermanBrews76 (667), Eugene, Oregon, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 26, 2002 Smells like the loaf of whole wheat bread my wonderful, kind, loving mother made today. the flavor however was just kind of weak and watery. Way too light for a brown in my opinion. Nice nutty finish with hints of chocolate. I expected more. Near the bottom of the glass though, I noticed a more complex aroma and stronger flavor. Perhaps it was just too cold? Anyway, it failed to live up to my expectations. brownalegirl (199), Fountain, Michigan, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Dec 4, 2002 Good strong caramelly malt with bitter undertones of nutshells and hops. It’s pretty carbonated and if you sip it right away the harsher, biterer tones stand in the rough texture. But as it warms, mellows, and settles, it turns positively rich and the bitter accents fade behind a creamier, exquite round maltiness. Yum! hennes (932), Fountain, Michigan, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 2, 2002 I don’t expect to ever find another Boyne River, and that may hurt the ratings of the browns I come across, but this one fired me up considerably. It’s not the American hop edged brown styel that helped launch BRB into the top ranks of my personal beer pantheon, but its light, creamy mouth feel really sets off the rich chocolatey malt action and marks this one as a top notch brew. If it weren’t so sweet, I’d likely be raving.
