Commercial Description:
Without a doubt the finest dark beer brewed in the United States. Styled after a traditional Munchener-Dunkel, Dark is a rich, delicious beer combined with excellent drinkability - a rare combination.

With a slightly murky haze, Munich Dark presents a very vivid and rich burgundy brown color, and you would almost think it were deep black if you’re drinking in low light. With a slightly sweet roasted nut and bread nose, it presents scents also seen in marzen, weizenbock and Vienna styles. Moderately frothy texture, slightly sweet corn, hay and wheat flavors, with a subtle tinge of creamy, zesty yeast on the sides of the tongue. Balanced and subtly flavorful body, but it seems to fall apart in the finish, leaving the tongue slightly parched and begging for some sort of closure, instead there’s a slightly bland and stale flavor that tends to linger.

12 oz bottle from brewery’s shop. Deep dark red color; pleasant aroma. Taste is a nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. Very nice version of a dunkel lager.

Surprisingly good brew! Pours a hazy reddish brown. Aroma is very sweet with caramel and malt dominating the nose. Taste is caramel, brown sugar, a bit of fruit and a subtle hop taste to finish it up. Very tasty! I’d buy this again.

Very nice interpretation of a Munchener-Dunkel, a deep reddish-brown brew with a lofty, creamy tan head. The aroma is great, lightly roasted malt, sweet with caramel and a dab of butterscotch, and quite fruity for a lager. The flavor drops a notch, yet remains enjoyable. Rich caramel, brown sugar sweetness, burnt toast, and some faint hopping to help balance it out. I probably won’t be sharing this six-pack.

Honey-sweet aroma with spice and salt (soy sauce) on the nose. Dark brown with some red cast. Easy drinking with syrupy sweetness running through the roasted malt s. Light hops on the finish and a nice smooth end. Not my style, but once in a while is ok.

12oz bottle.
Clear dark auburn copper with medium-thin extremely tightly packed off-white head that sticks around forever. Sweet malt, light roasted grain and slight hop spice aroma. Flavor is more dry than sweet, though there is plenty of malt sweetness in this beer, complemented by medium hop bitter and a slightly dry aftertaste. Incredibly smooth, creamy palate. A highly competent dunkel. Capital continues to earn a spot in my list of revered breweries.

(12 oz bottle: Obtained in trade with hopdog, thanks Steve!) For an American dunkel, I didn’t expect this to rival the imported German dunkels I’ve been drinking lately, but this is one tasty and authentic brew. First off, this medium-full bodied beer is packed with flavor rather than being some boring, watery clone. Lots of dark, malty character shows roast, nuts, toast, caramel, moderate sweetness and mild bitterness, and then a wonderful smokiness emerges late in the finish. And all this continues on and on, extending the finish seemingly forever without any loss of flavor. I can’t tell how long I’ll keep tasting the lucious maltiness because I can’t not take another sip for very long. Unfortunately, for so much flavor, the nose is only mildly aromatic, with aromas of roast and caramel. Moderate carbonation and rich maltiness has a gentle and soft, yet rich and round mouthfeel. Medium-dark brown body is clear in appearance so the steady stream of tiny carbonation bubbles can be seen rising toward the surface. After the tan head peaked at around an inch in height during the pour, it has slowly settled to a wide ring, but left very little in the way of lacing. If I lived in within Capital’s distribution area, this would be a beer I’d buy for regular consumption. A delicious brew.

dark brown color thin off white head some lace. Sweet malt hints of toffee and grain. Palate is even coated some what creamy. Flavor is big grains and some sweet malts. A plain dunkel fairly well done.
