| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 14, 2003 A very good dunkel, bound to please me as that is one of my favorite styles of lager. A deep, brownish amber, with piles of dense, immotile head. The aroma is roasty and creamy and sweet; very singularly malty as a good lager should be, and bereft of fruitiness, which makes it desirable for some food pairings. The flavor is just gorgeous: Werther's original, dark bread, maple syrup and coffee roast, all with very "meaty" undertones, which resonate across harmonics of malty etudes. The sweet finish is balanced by the cutting forthrightness of just the right modicum of CO2, and a generous helping of bittering hops, although very little in the way of flavoring or aroma hops. Overall very nice and HELL YES I will buy this one again. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 24, 2003 Nice deeply orangy/red color with an overall brownish tone, thin tannish head that fades leaving a thin haze and very fine stringy lace in small areas of coverage. Smell is soft and light of dark fruits, plum, banana, some nuttyness and creamy maltyness with a touch of light spice. Very subtle in approach on the nose, a bit to light though. Taste is more subtleties of dark fruits, banana, plum, raisin, a touch of sweetness and maltyness, but far to thin and shortly visited, weakened hops near the finish slightly. Feel is thin and lighter medium body, again, it doesn't have any staying power what so ever, just a short memory of what could be. It still makes for good easy drinking. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jun 10, 2003 Updated: Sep 16, 2003Bottled. Reading these other descriptions, I wonder just what was in my bottle. Color was fine, head foamed up but dissipated quickly. I caught a big whiff of sorghum & molasses, like you get when you brew with a dark malt extract. Couldn't find roast malt notes at all. But then the other dark lagers I've tried lately have been very lacking in uniformity, so maybe this is closer to style than I realize. Eminently enjoyable, but not what I expected. Re-rated; Draft. From the tap it comes off somewhat better; a decent dark roast taste. I think I almost an allergic reaction from the hop nose? Slick (1962), Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | May 25, 2003 Very nice dark brown color.Tall tan head that takes some time to fade.Very nice dark roasted malt aroma, slight hops presence with a small hint of spice. The taste was a little thin slightly malty, mildly sweet, with a mellow hop presence and the spice didn't make a presence at all.the malt and mild hopping does show up in the after taste but little else after that. This is not a bad brew just a little weak and could use a little more work to put it over the edge. dev (50), Savannah, Missouri, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 8, 2003 Thick long lasting foamy tan head with same color lace all the way down. Dark brown coca cola color.Tiny bubble carbonation. Smell of chocolate, yeast and banana. Moderate hop bitterness, chocolate, banana, semi sweet flavor. Alcohol presence unmistakable. Slight bitter aftertaste. Heavy and semi thick. Quite a different experience. Silphium (2138), Haslett, Michigan, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 3, 2003 I am just now noticing the description: "without a doubt the finest dark beer brewed in the United States."
LOL. I certainly hope not, although Munich Dark is respectable in most regards. Pours amber, with a weak aroma and a nice, malty taste which quickly dissipates. The body is a bit too thin for this beer to be considered "the finest in the United States," and the flavor lacks the degree of complexity and persistence that the unfortunate description implies. Still, a respectable beverage, but I'll stick to my European counterparts for this style. urbnhautebourg (974), Annapolis, Maryland, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Mar 9, 2003 Great, full dark malt aroma with some hop spice. Unfortunately, the flavor doesn't deliver on the promise of the aroma. A little thin and just lacking in malt flavor. LiebeBier (793), Annapolis, Maryland, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Mar 8, 2003 Very rich and maty aroma. It smells great, but doesn't taste as goos as it smells. If it had more body this might be a classic.
