You can smell the smoky roasted notes immediately with this beer. Flavor at first is crisp and the roasted flavors quickly come out. The roasted flavor is definitely not a strong coffee roast, it is more mellow. Like roasted grain. Heavy enough to keep you warm in the winter, and yet not so heavy to weigh the palette down. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 12, 2005 Updated: Apr 12, 2005A truly complex beer. Each sip goes through a myriad of flavor stages. A distinct roasted flavor and the thin red-amber color give this away as a winter seasonal, but what truly stands out is its intricate aftertaste. Going from roasted, to tangy and mellow, and then to slightly sweet and crisp, this beer packs in a bewildering amount of taste, although nothing stands out in paticular besides the roast. The taste is disarmingly nice, faints hints of everything, but nothing overpowering. A distinct treat. Falconseye8 (525), Cartersville, Georgia, USA

Roasty & malty flavor with some alcohol, warming; mouth filling- the head is resilient- has a nice dark brownish amber color. Bittersweet, raisiny flavors - tasty! | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 15, 2005 Orange and red in color. Had it of tap and didn’t seem to come out that much after warming up. I thought the smell was weak but sweet and fruity. Taste is almost the same good flavor but doesn’t linger on. hezron (604), Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 7, 2005 Rich red-orange color with diminishing white head. Aroma of sweet malts and some orange-citrus. Flavor is sweet like a light caramel. Finish is acidic, not very bitter. It tastes a lot like their dunkel as it warms. Medium palate, very smooth. This one is orange with slight ruby edges and a small head. Aroma of big fruit, some spice, caramel malt, and a sweet berry component. I even sensed black pepper and a first aroma trait for me.....CANTELOUPE! Marvelous aroma. Tastes caramel malty, fruity, spicy, black peppery, with a cabernet/finish. I love the aroma, I love the taste, and I love this beer.
