Commercial Description:
We’ve gone and done it again, the brewers were itching to do something different, so they brought a new Belgian-style beer to the East Coast. The Belgian Tripel/Double Ipa is a hybrid style that has been brewed by only a couple of Belgian breweries. We brewed a medium bodied Tripel, but instead of using boring European hops, we used American hops more toward the end of the boil to create more citrus and floral hop flavor and aroma as opposed to bitterness.

Draught at the brewpub, Downtown location, as Capitol City Double D
Hazy dark amber color; creamy head. Nice aroma of hop and caramel. Sweet malt flavor, caramel too, good body structure, with a very good hopping. Very good. Long final.

Downtown location. Thick, syrupy light gold color. Luminous. Aroma suggests blueberry cotton candy, green apples and pineapple. Intense, rather synthetic fructose sugar. Dominant taste of pepper, alcohol, and banana; more or less a banana liqueur or some variation of Malibu. Honey lends a smoother, more amicable sweetness at the end. The finish is fairly foul, with a hot, faint bitterness. A hop compost bonfire. Slick and powerful palate; completely indelicate. A fine idea. Flawed execution, uninteresting realization.

Draft Downtown. Glowing murky and soft yellow, very hefe-like in appearance but with a small white head. Very full, very nice banana yeast esters in the nose, dry and sour smelling. Very balanced with the sweet unferentables, though, and crisp, with a lemon sourness up front. Midly corase, a bit starchy, bitter over the middle and into the finish. Has a weird grassy flavor and is quite dry in the finish, but overall it’s a solid beer.

Draft (downtown location)... Murky golden ale with a small, creamy, white head. The nose is torn between that of a Belgian tripel and an American IPA. Light fruity esters, mild spicy phenols and then BANG!, pine and grapefruit. Malty, fruity, sugary-sweet flavor, but then BANG!, those American hops kick in and totally balance things out. Full-bodied and silky with humble carbonation. Lengthy sweet, then bitter finish... dries out in the end.

(Shirlington) Cloudy golden body topped by creamy, fluffy off-white head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is moderately sweet, grapefruit, pineapple. Taste is moderately sweet, pineapple, grapefruit. Finish is moderately dry, light Belgian yeast. Medium-full body, some acidity, creaminess. Nice double, but the Belgian qualities are nominal.

Tap at RFD for Winter Holidaze Extravaganzee. Cloudy golden-orange; white head with decent retention. Lots of piney hops; hints of a belgian style underneath. Similar mouthfeel: plenty of dank piney hops, with a light malt backbone; light belgian backdrop. Medium finish: dry, hoppy, spice.
