Commercial Description:
British brewers attempting to create a 'nutritious' beverage began to add oatmeal to the grist, and eureka!..out came a stunning oatmeal stout. Our version is very full bodied with an almost silky feel. This is a semi-sweet stout that is balanced with the coffee roastiness at the finish.

(02.03.06) On tap at Capitol City brewpub (Capitol Hill), Washington, D.C. Black hued beer having a small off white head. No discernable carbonation. Soft roasted malt aroma. Medium bodied stout with smooth and creamy texture that starts with light sweet malt and roasted malt/expresso flavors. Finishes dry with light roasted malt bitterness. An excellent drinkable stout with pronounced roasted barley flavor.

Draft at Capitol City location. Dark body with a small tan head. Aromas of roasted coffee. Very smooth with flavors of coffee, chocolate, and roastiness. I was pleasantly suprised with this one.

Draft at Capitol City Union Station. Pours black with a tan head that lasts. Lots of lacing. Aroma of oats and sweetened coffee. Taste is the same with some faint fruitiness. Mellow finish. Very good paired with the BBQ sandwich.

Draft @ Capitol City Capitol Hill Dark black, tan head, light lacing. Nose of bright roast, sweet astringency and creamy coffee. The flavor is nice and chewy, plenty of fruit and dark malt. Sweet tame finish. Good stout. Blackout?!?!?!

I didn’t realize when I had this at the brewpub that they had previously (a year ago or so) had an "Oatmilk" stout. But here this was on the menu as an oatmeal stout, and I subsequently called and verified that this is a different beer. Very smokey, roasted, chocolate aroma. Very dark brown color, 95% opaque, clinging head. Good robust flavor, not the most sophisticated (lacking a few subtleties) but still, densely packed with chocolate and coffee, with an odd sense of eating out-of-the-box chocolate brownies that have an artificial frosting. Moderate palate--very normal, not especially anything. Good. (on tap at Postal Square location)

Draft... Capitol Hill location... Black ale with a small, creamy, khaki head. Great retention and lacework. The nose is all coffee, chocolate and toasted cashews. Leans a hair on the sweet side of balance. Big chocolate and restrained vanilla. Medium-bodied and creamy with moderate carbonation. Chocolaty, slightly sweet finish. A very pleasant surprise!

Beautiful deep brown-black stout with a thin, long-lasting head. Nose has a nice roast character with hints of coffee and molasses. Intriguing flavor, lots of roasted malts with hints of saltiness. Very woody, nutty, and creamy, with balancing hops.

Sample at the Downtown location. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black with a thin tan head that diminishes quickly. Stringy lacing on the glass. Dark chocolate and coffee in the nose. Medium, glassy smooth body with flavors of roasted coffee, semi-sweet chocolate and sweet malt. The finish is roasty with a short mild coffee aftertaste. Above average overall. Pretty sure Capitol City’s Blackout existed before Great Lakes’, but I doubt anyone will ever think of this one first when they hear the name.
