Commercial Description:
A truly unique beer combining the best brewing traditions of Belgium with the natural goodness of manuka leaves, fresh picked from the native forests of New Zealand. When Cpt. James Cook first landed in New Zealand over 200 years ago, he brewed a beer using the leaves of the manuka tree in a quest to protect the health of his crew from vitamin C deficiency. Little did he know that the indigenous Maori people had been using manuka for centuries for its health giving properties. In 1996 the Mussel Inn refined Cook's original recipe and has since been harvesting fresh manuka from the surrounding hills to produce a beer of unique flavour and quality. Today, the same beer is being brewed in Belgium using the best of its brewing techniques and the same manuka leaves from New Zealand.

Bottle picked up by Barry Reynolds and consumed on a narrowboat gliding serenly down the Oxford canal in Jericho, Oxford 06-09-08 Some perfume on nose also lime and cold tea, actually it Liptons Iced Tea and the colour is not too disimilar pours light amber with white head. Tastes a little bitter at first more of a bitter bite than I’m used to with a Belgian beer but then the Liptons Iced Tea comes back. Its really not bad, quite interesting.

330 ml stubby bottle, thanks to oh6gdx and chris_o. ABV is 5.7%. I admit I had never heard of manuka before I got this beer! Clear amber colour, huge off-white head with an orangey hue. Moderate aroma of malts and spice, and something undefined which I suppose is the manuka leaves. The flavour has moderate malts and some caramel and undefined spice, with a noticeable bitterness in the finish, which might or might not be caused by manuka leaves, in addition to the hops? Definitely drinkable, but not particularly exciting.

A little hazy amber colored beer, with a off-white head. The aroma of spices, fruits and malts. The taste of brown spiced biscuits, some quinine, there is bitterness. The after taste is dry bitter. I don’t no the aroma and taste of Manuka, but iI think it’s there, because there are some unknown notes.

[Sampled on svogertour with Thomas and Troels at Mols.] Haze darkorange look with good light orange head. Fruits, weak caramel. Nice manuka?!?, I didn’t know the flavor, but ok. Perfumed and dry finish.

Looks good, dark amber and clear. Has a fine, off-white head, mostly lasting. But I dont like the aroma, too perfumed, perhaps the "manuka" leaves.

330ml bottle (from BBF, Oslo). Big creamy, off-white head slowly fading over a dark amber body. Hazy second pour. Fragile laceworks on the glass. Aroma of sweet honeyed malt. Flavour of spicy green tea, dried fruits and herbs. Touch of yeast to the ending. Medium bodied. A rather refreshing and health-giving summer drink (Tromsø, 23.07.2008).

330 ml bottle. amber colour. medium white head, fading. it’s an easy fruity beer with a kind of spicey aftertaste. I don’t know how mauka leafs taste....... but perhaps thats what gives it the spicey aftertaste.....
